I just got a package from eBay with both Athearn F7A and B units, undecorated (sort of; someone started). Broken motor mounts on both, but they run, so I've got mounts on order and I figure a good cleaning will do them well. They had me scratching my head about a couple of other things, though.
First, the A unit has flywheels, but the B unit does not. Is it worth sticking a flywheel motor in there, or, considering I won't be running the B unit without it being consisted with the A, does it really matter?
The B unit has no cab or headlights, of course, but there's a light bulb inside. Huh?
I'll be painting these in New Haven McGinnis colors; interestingly, New Haven per se never had F7s, but the Connecticut DOT bought a couple back in the '90s and painted them in the old New Haven colors. I don't think they had B units, but it's my railroad.

Hi Bob:
yup ypur road, you decide. About the "B" light, many F7's had reversing lights beside the rear door actually so did Sharks. Perhaps the "B" units did as well though you may have to drill and put a headlight ring there. Look up railroading in the Northeast online and see if you can get some pics to guide you?
Hope that helps?

| Personally, I'd pull the chassis from the b-unit and replace it with a dummy. The F7A is strong...I use one to pull a B-B-A dummy loco setup with six passenger cars around my layout with no problem. I have added more, but my layout is so small that I like to keep the trains shorter so they fit in the blocks of wiring. Then you can put the powered chassis in something else. Maybe you've got more resources, but I'm frugal with stuff like that.

I'll have to look into the "B" reversing light. Stock, though, it's hard to tell there's a light in there.
As for making the B a dummy and using the chassis for something else, I hadn't considered that, and it's not a bad idea. Only problem right now is that I don't have a dummy chassis to swap it with. Ideally I guess I'd find an "A" dummy and swap it that way, so I'd have two powered A units. For now I'll keep it as it is, but definitely keep my eyes open for the parts to do as you suggest.

Bob,
I've always liked that Mcginnis scheme on the New Haven locos. Pretty cool
Where are you planning on getting your decals from? What color paints are needed?
I have several rebuild F units that are waiting for paintjobs and road names.
Two of them will have New Haven schemes eventually
Post some pics of yours.....
Cheers, Ian
