A while back I was into weathering, big time. Still am really, but have been working on other projects and then on top of that, this blasted Tyco bug crawled up my... ear...

*ahem*

Anyway, here's my first truly serious effort in weathering, done in 2004. Snapped this pic while on my honeymoon in Cumberland, MD back in 2002:

And then set to work recreating it:

My model was made from a pre-decorated Front Range, which was the closest I had at the time (took two years to find it, too). So it wasn;t exact to start with, but close. Trying to do one car to match a photo taught me more about weathering and art techniques than anything I ever read or tried before.

Okay...everyone take note of what Tony L.'s poor spouse must endure if he would consider it fine behavior on his honeymoon to be out snapping pictures of rotting L&N hoppers!!! LOL!!! [:p]

Sorry Tony L., but I had to pick on you there! [;)]

What did you use to weather? Are they chalks? I've been playing around with the weathering chalks lately and like them pretty well.

Excellent work on the hopper...really looks great!!

Aw man, why you gotta be a hater? [;)] [:D]

Actually, the God's Honest Truth is that it was my wife's idea to go there... with the specific intention of railfanning! [^] And that's not even HALF the story, oh no. That was a great trip - I gave the B&O Museum a little gift and we were treated like VIPs... even got to watch them take their newly restored dockside 0-4-0 on its first certification run!

Yes gentlemen, I hit the jackpot in more ways than one... although this Tyco obsession could cash it out if I'm not careful... [:0]

N-E-Ways, the question is more like, what didn't I use on that car? Acrylics, oils, pastels, chalks, powders, markers... sandpaper, xactos, erasers, decals, transfers... it was certainly a project! I have always been a big fan of chalks, but if you haven't tried them, you need to get your hands on some of the "weathering powders" that are out there. Bragdon's and AIM are both worth the price. And go to WallyWorld and stock up on an assortment of those cheapo 50-cent paints in the craft department - they're GREAT for experimenting and even the final touches once you get some techniques down.
