Hi,
I'm Mark from NJ. I collect mostly Mantua and Tyco trains, but have a few others, also. My favorite engines are my Mantua Goat, Tyco Sharknose and Rivarossi GG1. My layout is pretty much a 4"-8" shelf around the baseboard of my basement family room with bridges and tunnels cut through the cabinets. Not much by the way of scenery, but I can lie on the floor and watch the trains run around the room.
I enjoy looking at the photos of the layouts. I'd post some pictures of mine, but I'm not sure how.

I have a few close-up photos, nothing of the whole room, but I can't figure out how to upload them to this email!

Click on the paperclip icon and follow the prompts.Browse to it, say ok, tell it you want to upload file and then it will ask if you want included or something like that, say yes. Should do it!
Cheers, -Gareth

I tried the paperclip, but I didn't see my photos. I'll try again!
Here goes....
Nah, didn't work. I got this error message...
The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration tools.
I tried reducing the size of the photos, but got the same message. I'll try again tomorrow.

Welcome to the boards! Your layout sounds interesting, and I would love to see pics, so here are some directions:
1. Be sure the pictures are saved somewhere on your computer.
2. Rename the pics so that the .JPG extension is in lowercase--.jpg. You can also open the pics in a photo program, resize or crop them, then save them with the .jpg extension.
3. When you post a message, click the paperclip.
4. You should get a browse button. Click it and find the folder where the picture is located. Click on the picture's filename.
5. Click "upload file" then wait until it is finished. You will see a blue progress bar.
6. DON'T SKIP THIS...click on the words "Click here to add this in your message"
7. The link should appear in your message window. Now you can proceed to type whatever you want or add another photo.
Hope that helps, and I can't wait to see your interesting layout!

I had capital ".jpgs" Let's see if this works....
This corner cabinet above has tunnels through it and bridges in front.
 Drawbridge to get past doorway
Got to have a passenger station!
Was originally going to be upper track only, but I love seeing two trains pass each other, so I added the lower level later.

You can see some tunnels in the background going through the bookshelves.
Well, it worked!
This is still a work in progress! I'm planning to add a trolley track above the section in the last photo, if I can ever find the Ideal bridges that I'm looking for! Not a lot by way of scenery...it is all on the basement floor, so I have to be able to shop-vac it easily! I couldn't get the tracks past the doors of an aquarium cabinet, so I wound up raising the cabinet on a platform and going under! It is actually a pretty neat room. The trains don't take up much room, and I can run long trains! I have to get on the 'questions' forums and see if anyone can suggest ways to repair a few of them.
Thanks for the help and interest!

Hey Chevy. Welcome to the forum! Nice layout and trains. I especially like your Pennsylvania streamliners. I also like how many light-up accessories you have along your tracks. Very cool

Welcome to the forum, Chevy. I've always loved layouts that run around or through walls and are integrated with the house. Very cool. I really like the drawbridge, which reminds me of a similar setup at the railroad club in Paul Mallery's basement many years ago.

Hi guys,
Glad you like my trains! I'll have to post more photos someday. I've added more since I took these. I also like to collect vintage accessories that light up or do something along the tracks. I have a Lionel rotating beacon, a blinking lighthouse, a Tyco crossing with ringing bell, and many Marx accessories from the 50s and 60s. Just last week I bought a cool Marx dwarf signal that I have never seen before. What I'm REALLY looking for are two Ideal bridges with red lights from the 50s. If anybody knows where I can get some, let me know!!
The aluminum streamliners are my favorites! I have several sets. The Pennsylvania set looks real good with the Rivarossi GG1. I also have a New York Central set and a Northern Pacific set, which I think is the nicest looking set Mantua ever made. They sound good going around the room, too!
I made the drawbridge out of some pony trestle kits, attached it to a board with a hinge, and have a hook and eye to hold it vertical when the trains are not in use. And I have a spotlight on it to show it off.
I built the station and painted the people when I was 11. The Coming 'Round the Mountain set was my first set. I got it for Christmas in 1977. I asked for a "Chattanooga" set, but got this one, which I think is even nicer! But the engine doesn't run anymore! Gotta fix it somehow.

I can't remember who the maker of the arch bridge is. It is a nice bridge! They have kits for the center arch part and also for the side "pony" sections. I used one arch and two ponies for my bridge. The kits were very easy to assemble. Gray plastic with black pedestrian walkways with railings.

Oh, and the tan arch bridge is made by Kaller, I think, if that is the one you meant! I got it in a box of stuff at a train show for a buck. I think it looks cool and hit it with a couple of spotlights to show it off.

I meant the steel arch bridge with the approach sections....I dont know who made it but one thing is for sure MTH copied it about 12 years ago in O gauge ...I have the exact dupe on my O layout.
Very nice car...That machine would make Dinah Shore and Pat Boone "proud"...God knows between the two of them they help sell a "bunch of em"...that Stewarts that it is parked in front of is somewhere in Jersey right ?
I know I have seen that location but just cant place it.

Of course I should have know that right from the jump...That place was always spotless. is it still there ?...I remember seeing it all the time when I "ran" back from Philly as young truck driver back in the late 70s.

That's a great layout! I've seen lots of "around the ceiling" setups, but going around the baseboard is a great idea!

I was originally planning to do an "around the ceiling" one, but I thought with HO, you wouldn't be able to see it too well, plus you'd have to look UP all the time!
Then I thought about doing something eye level, but it was too hard to get around the room without looking junky or going in front of the TV, aquarium, etc., so I went lower.
The main problem with this it that it is basically on the basement floor, and dust, cobwebs and cat hair build up over time. That is why I decided to go with simple boards as opposed to any kind of scenery, so I can clean it easier. I'll have to try to take some more photos so you can see the whole room. It actually blends in with the room pretty well.

Hi Mark. Love the trains you've pictured here. I love Tyco and Mantua myself. I live in PA myself, moved from NJ but I do still work in Hunterdon County. Is that anyway near where you live?
Brian, I restored the archives for the help forum, sorry about that. I made your topic sticky also since it was a very useful post.

$175???? I think I paid around $120 for it maybe, along with the GG1 and 6-car aluminum passenger set! I'm having trouble with the engine these days; it doesn't run. I have to get on the 'help' forums one of these days.
NYC I'm in SJ; outside Philly.
