I picked this set up today at a show in Allentown.
I never knew Bachmann made a set that came in such a fancy box.
All of the cars of marked "Bachmann" but I don't think there should be two gondolas.

Looks like a boxcar would have gone in where the lower gon is.....

Could that be a salesman's sample box?

I want to say I've seen one of those elsewhere once (in HO), if only in a catalog. It may have been a single-pack loco. So its probably not a saleman's box. It's pretty fragile overall at wouldn't stand to the rigors of over-the-road trade show handling.
In the early 70's Bachmann sold much of their stuff - especially in N scale - this way. I can attest to personally holding numerous Bachmann N scale products in this style of plastic clamshell case - right down to the style of logo and gold foil applique.
Chances are that's one of the earlier GP40's, with the roof-mount rear headlight and the metal chassis, can motor and flywheels. Yet the fuel tank looks kinda chintzy for that from here.
Other cars are Kader's early "we'll sell to anyone" AHM dupes. 2nd gon's spot almost looks too low-profile for a boxcar, but that would be sensible...

HA! I was right about that 2nd gon's space being too small for a boxcar... that hopper belongs in there!

Thanks to Tony Cook, as usual...

The box was standard fare for sets from 1970-1972. Kinda neat. But I'll bet more fragile than cardboard in the long run... I can hear those lugs snapping off the lid from here...

All the info is right here....

Many thanks again to Mr Cook !
The sets were sold from 1970 to about 73 with the "exclusive crystal case"
The lehigh hopper goes were the C&IE gondola is and a boxcar goes in that hole.
The gondola (C&IE) does not belong it was added at some point.
I tried the loco ... 8 wheel drive ...quite heavy...runs very smooth and quiet !
Nice set for 35.00..

And the box car in the other. Should have looked at the shadow above the hopper!

Wow! That Burlington Route diesel was one of the FIRST locomotives I had (it was given to me by a family friend who no longer wanted his trains back in the 70s when he moved and got into theatre). I must have run it until it fell to pieces! Brings back really good memories. I had to hunt for years for a running replacement that didn't have all the railing broken off.
Well, the boxcar I've seen for sale at shows all over the place and on *bay. Same for the transformer. So, you should have a complete set in no time! :^) Good find!
Damn, I'm envious of you folks who have shows this time of year. Any shows remotely close to me are in the late fall. :^(
