Today's mail brought the Bubble Yum auction box car & semi truck that I won on Sunday night. I always clean my pieces befor displaying or putting them in my storage boxes. I have used a little Lysol on a fine cloth to start the cleaning, but today it cost me a Tyco Bubble Yum box car. The white paint on parts of the label come off. As an antique automobile restorer, It's hard to beLIEve that I have used chemicals for so many years with good results and then!! I bought the auction basically for the semi truck trailer which is fine, and had planned to put the B-Y box car on auction since I have atleast one mint boxed. I don't want to ruin any Tyco trains not even the most common piece.
So today, I elect myself for the "Jackass Of the Week" award.

...then I am your lieutenant.

I once spent $50 ($25 ea) for a MIB red boxed Cotton Belt and Southern Pacific GP20...only to trip and bust my @ss in the rain in a parking lot of a show, dropping both locos on the asphalt, and having them splinter into several pieces., and get soaking wet.

Talk about sick to my stomach!

We've all been there, but I would avoid Lysol, since Pine-sol is used to strip paint. I tend to use a non-ammonia based glass cleaner or just warm, soapy water with a cloth, or an old toothbrush for deeply textured areas. You have to be careful with decals like that, and the truth is it may have been brittle enough that anything would have damaged it.

I was using something mild when cleaning up an old S scale American Flyer Hudson a few years ago, and ended up smearing the dry transfer lettering on the tender a bit.

Yes Erich! I believe it is repairable too. I've been doing fine detail on expensive cars for years... I will repaint the logo or offer it on auction for someone who needs a Bubble Yum box car. I have at least 1 nice boxed B-Y boxcar stored away.

The Lysol, I have used just the lightest spray coat on a soft cloth for years... This time it did affect the "whte paint only" on the logo. But I do believe I will not keep using Lysol. It's not worth taking the risk of another Tyco (or other) car.
