Whenever I get discouraged by the uncertain state of our present world, the skies are dreary and overcast, my health gets in the way, and I get the general lethargic feeling that all the magic and promise from my childhood is gone for good ... I come here and almost immediately get recharged! This forum is great. Best medicine a Model Railroader could want with really nice folk!

Funny, I know another forum where even a thread like this could start a bitter disagreement. I'm glad we don't have that atmosphere here.

Well, let's see how model railroading gets me though this latest uneasy period in my life. Good thing I got what I wanted when the going was good and I could afford to do so. As of now, I get to be part of the 1 in 10 Americans who are out of work. Funny how your employer can state "2009 was an exciting record profit year, the best in the past 10 years, and we expect this upward growth trend to continue with company expansion in 2010" to shareholders and employees ... then less than a week later walk a couple hundred of you into individual conference rooms, announce that your jobs have been eliminated, and it's all due to the continuing "Economic Downturn in 2010" the company is facing.
You can't say "record profit year," "growth" and "company expansion" in one breath ... then " the company experienced an economic downturn in 2009 making it necessary for us to permanently let all of you go."
I think, and I'm not alone, many companies are just using the "economic downturn" buzzword as a "catch all" to reduce head count and salaries, then force those who remain to work longer hours for less with the veiled threat of "we did it to them, we can do it to you just as easy." That's what my employer did - for the last 5 years I know of they've been wanting to reduce work force back to 1990-95 levels (we were a smaller company then and not nearly as diversified), outsource everything they can offshore (the CEO was against using domestic outsourcing because it "cost too much"), and force the same current 2010 productivity levels. 2009 came along and I guess they saw their chance to use a convenient smoke screen.
Oh well. Being the first group laid off - I lucked out and got my full severance, unused accrued vacation pay, and didn't have to sign any non-compete papers. Got health coverage too, for the time being.
The second group they laid off after me - not so lucky. Company pulled a fast one, transferring whole departments and dozens of staff overnight to the management of an offshore management company. Meaning, people walked in one morning to find out as of 12:01 AM EST they were no longer employees of my former employer - but had been transferred to, would be paid by, and were now managed as contractors to my former employer by a foreign management company (their new boss). All without their say or awareness ... which wasn't necessary (on the company's part). This management company incidentally did not recognize any seniority, unused accrued vacation, had no provisions for severance and had no health care benefits. Nasty - those who could have retired, they got screwed the worst since you can't retire from a company you no longer work for. Some thought there was a "grace period" where they could still retire - but there isn't. It's like trying to retire from a company after you get fired. This way my employer could save what it would have had to pay out in severance and unused vacation to the transferred employees. The plan was for these employees to work as contractors for a few months while my employer transitioned and outsourced their stuff ... and then the offshore management company would simply drop them after a few months and all the transfers would get is unemployment. No severance and no COBRA (the management company has no health plan, therefore there is no COBRA coverage available). I heard my employer got this tactic from IBM when IBM reduced its work force. Sad part, it's all legit. Looks like class action lawsuits popping up over this unethical practice - but a lawyer friend of mine said there's nothing prohibiting this activity. If a company currently wants to do it and doesn't worry about looking like the Devil ... it's legal.
So, as I look for a new job - have time to put together a few more kits.

The return of the Robber Barons. Greed has always been with us, and so has these despicable individuals. Our last recession was made by them trying to outdo each other in the amount they steal from their employees and stockholders. it is amazing that they with their greed had shut down the world. We need major changes in our governments. To many house and senate members have forgotten that they are there for the good of the people not for lining there pockets.
