Thank You Alco Fan - no script - took about 2 hrs to make that 2 minute video - kept -re-filming video scenes until desired results were achieved. Glad you liked it. This was a mint set also.

Hey Brian. Up until now I've only heard mention about the operating hopper. I never knew exactly what it did or how it worked. Do the doors on the bottom ever leak the coal out when not over the special piece of track?

Thanks for the vid!

Cheez - the metal doors on bottom of car are weighted so when car is on track they are closed. i have over 15 of these Virginian cars and i have never had coal spill onto track through doors. I am not saying that are not some cars that were made that do -the ones i have don't and i would guess there are a few that may be out there that don't work right. My opinion - Tyco's engineers or designers during the time these were made were clever / highly skilled individuals to come up with this accessory and some of the other mechanical/electric accessories for their trains and U.S 1 trucking sets that function at or near 100%. All of the sets i have bought new in sealed box - the operating snap track is Atlas Brass and the other sections are Tyco Brass. I have yet to purchase one with tru steel track or Atlas nickel silver snap track operating piece

Not your DSL - my natural Southern Draw! may play slow in some areas though due to user overload -

After I saw the video and how well it worked, I went and dug out my set to see if I could get it working that well.

I actually have a different set, the #868 Ore Unloading Trestle Set. It comes with a black DT&I operating hopper car and "ore" instead of "coal."

It doesn't work as well... and I think it is because the ore included in this set is pretty course as compared to the coal included in the #862 set. The pieces of ore look to be about 4 times the size of the coal and tend to get stuck in the operating door openings and plug it up. I had to pretty much force the ore out; it didn't fall on it's own. Maybe I'll buy some model ballast or coal of a finer texture to see how it works.

Also, the operating track (the part that opens the doors) in this set is made from a 6" piece of TYCO steel track... there are several other pieces of 9" TYCO steel track in the box, but I don't think they are original to the set.

Interestingly enough, I don't see the #868 set listed in the "action cars & accessories page of the brown box TYCO resource. I only saw it in the 1981 and 1982 catalogs, and then it appears to have been replaced with the #862 set.
