I agree, I'd like to know how these re-motor projects are holding up. The older ones from GIC and Brianstyco in particular.

Mine is only a week old, and I haven't run it much yet. I just finished a second one.

i've done six so far with the ps2 tray motors & they've been great. i've been running my golden eagle everyday this week, pulling about 15 cars on average, for a total of about an hour & a half everyday.

i'm going to lay all the track i have on the floor, & see how many one will pull.

Sadly, I haven't run mine too often. Blame me having too many locos to choose from and not enough time to run the layout. But, it still fires right up. I'd guess it might have about 15-20 hours total runtime, most of that in the first few months after it was built. I never did a stress test nor run it full-speed all the time. It's quite capable of pulling a more than a few cars at rocket speed as my video famously showed... in reality I usually run slower than that, which also has the benefit of prolonging the motor life via lower input voltage.

One thing is sure...they really are "rockets" when you turn up the power. It's fly-off-the table fast. But the flipside is that it takes very little power to achieve a slow, steady, more realistic speed.

All mine are still going.
I don't run them as much as I'd like (I have the to many locos and not enough time syndrome too)

I haven't run mine much either. I sent one away and it still runs and the one I have has resistors that I think slows the motor down. I have burned 2 up and replaced them with other CD motors. One was a Super 630 with a thin motor that didn't last long at all. It's motor came from an old personal CD player.
I did run a test on the first one I built and it burned up after about 45 minutes of moderate throttle, not too fast but not slow.

My only Tyco conversion is my Chattanooga, and it runs much stronger and steadier than it did stock. The motor is a Mitsumi, pulled from a disk drive. The most common brand is Mabuchi, and I have a bunch of them, but found this one to be quietest of the lot. These tray motors are usually rated 5.9V, but can easily handle the maximum 15V. (I've come across a few that were designed for only a few volts, and they scream when you test them on track voltage. They don't last long.) I would use the PS2 motors only if repowering a 6 axle unit, because it seems like they have a top speed more suitable for slot cars.

The new motor has actually dropped the speed. It's not a rocket like Tony's at all, and runs cool to the touch. The zamac block makes a good heat sink.

I've used these in a few Rivarossis as well, with no failures yet.

Hi all -- i have one Alco 630 Golden Eagle riding on a Stewart Chassis and another riding on an Athearn SD40-2 slightly modified chassis. ALL my other Tyco's you see in any of my videos are running Original Power Torque or Mantua motors in them. I will in future videos state whether original or modified. I have one locomotive that was sent to me by a member for testing purposes and it is modified with an CD tray motor with resistors and is running fine still -the locomotive is a Tyco BN shark. Hope this helps you MM1498 and any others -feel free to pm me also - Brian

mine are all still going strong, after i got a decent transformer i can make them crawl on the low speed, & they pull very very well. i'll try to get up a video to show them off one day.

Mine are doing great...been experimenting with resistors to see if I can't get that top end speed down but I'm thoroughly thrilled so far...still shopping for another early Tyco 2-8-0 to fit to my other remotored chassis.
