My Mehano 4-6-4 has been running strange lately. It seems to bump up and down on one side as it runs. Not really noticeable at high speeds, but at low speeds it's very obvious. I know virtually nothing about fixing steam engines and need a place to start. What could the problem be and how do I fix it? Thanks

The first thing I'd look for are bent parts like siderods and valve gear linkage. (check for loose rivets on the siderods too)
A driver gettung loose on the axle and slipping out of quarter is another possibility (I have seen that on their 4-6-2s).
Worn crank pins or axle bearings will cause that symptom but unless you have many, many hours of running time on it it is less likely than the other problems.

I flipped it upsidedown and gave it some power. The middle drive wheels seem to wobble forward and backward and there's a bit of a clicking noise. I know this is the drive axle with the gear that connects to the motor.

No bent rods that I could see.

The wobbling could be caused by preasur from the rods binding or there may be a problem with the axle gear.
