I would recomend getting back issues of Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman.

If you are detailing a specific type and roadname diesel locomotive or rolling stock, I like Model Railroading . It is out of circulation and copies are hard to find, even on ebay. But, I really like what they do when they review a prototype locomotive. They list all the part numbers for the HO scale detail parts needed. I'd like to find one of their articles for a Southern SD24.
