I saw these Bachmann freight cars not long ago that at first glance I thought were Silver Series models. Upon closer inspection I noticed they were packed in the older standard white box...the one that still shows the red-and-silver Santa Fe GP30 and UP DDA40X Centennial that haven't been around in some time among other B'man historical relics.

And the cars were not the same quality as the Silver Series. They did have knuckle couplers, but not EZ-Mate II knuckles with springs...they had the older original non-spring EZ-Mates. The car also have plastic wheels and axles and the older Bachmann friction-bearing truck sideframes. If you look, these are what are common put into train sets by Bachmann. They look much like the Silver Series car and even share the same schemes, but aren't quite up to the same quality.

Anyway, the cars at one shop were $7.99 and today I found them at a toy and hobby shop in St. Joseph, Missouri for $4.99. I picked up the red NW Wide-Vision Caboose; 40' N&W Hopper; and 50' ATSF Flat Car.

The end flaps do not list the roadname, just what type of freight car you have inside the box. And curiously, they all appear to carry the same Bachmann stock number 73649. The Santa Fe Flat Car only says on its end flap...ITEM NO. 73649 "HO" FLAT CAR...how's that for short and sweet?

I'd guess they are perhaps offered to dealers in an assortment package...hence the reason they all carry the same stock number? From what I could see the shop in St. Joe had like 3 different 40' Box Cars (Pennsy, B&O, B&M); 2 Flats (Pennsy, ATSF); 3 50' Plug Doors (Conrail, Chessie, Santa Fe); 2 Ore Cars (don't remember the roadnames); 2 40' Hoppers (B&O, N&W); and 3 Wide-Vision Caboose models (ATSF, CSX, N&W).

I believe I have several of the cars you found. They are sent to dealers who sell large amounts of Bachmann stuff. My shop here gets several boxes of the cars in an assortment. I have bought 40'stock cars, 40' and 50' boxcars, 40' tankcars, 40' flats, 40' hi-cube boxcars and 40' hoppers. These were all sold for $3.99 each. Alas, my shop did not get any cabooses.
