A shame they didn't run it now and then...although the amount of coal needed would blow a huge hole in Union Pacific's wallet for something unnecessary like running the Big Boy.

Wouldn't it be cool though...

I'm all for it...but the people at Union Pacific probably think otherwise.

Jerry,
It has everthing to with Tyco... It's an awesome "model" railroad your watching! And the bridge is one huge model... Check it out at http://www.gfsm.org/

Matt,
Union Pacific Big Boys and Challengers do not burn coal! but it is rumored that for the publicity, KFC is going to donate UP their used frying oil! What could be greater than steam engines that smell like fried chicken?
And I stand by Nelson when he takes exception to your use of the word "unnecessary"...

Actually Loopy, the Big Boys and Challengers did burn coal. 3985 has been converted to burn oil for excursion service, as has FEF-3 844. UP experimented with using oil in Big Boy 4005 years ago, but it was converted back to coal after problems with uneven heating due to the tremendous firebox.

Nelson,

I stand corrected... lost my head... again! And thank you for keeping this fool straight!

And Matt, my apologies for trying to make you look foolish! Now we know who the fool is and there is no fool like an old fool!

No problem, Loopy. Can you imagine the rain of cinders from those beasts?

Me, I've always wanted to smell a steam engine. The combination of burning coal, oil and maybe a bit of rust is something that no diesel can match.
