I bought this Royal Blue, never run, even tags attached, however the frame was broken/shattered. I know I have read about this metal fracturing but on older manufacturers engines.
I bought a beat up Royal Blue to change parts.

Let me know if you need any parts, Mike, because I have a bunch of junkers. The 0-8-0's have a solid frame without the plastic inserts that's stronger than the 2-8-0.
Does the loco have any other damage? I snapped one of those older frames in half by accident. It could have been zinc pest, but that's the first time I've seen it in a Tyco. Of course, these were made in Hong Kong, so the QC probably wasn't as tight as Mantua's.

Mike, Interesting. I was just PMing a member about having bought a Royal Blue set, in the packing box with individual boxes, at a yard sale. It had been there the year before but the price was high to me then. I saw it the second year and got it for a third of the asking price. I was impressed when I realized it was a smoker. I really wasn't collecting Tyco at the time, just HO trains.
Nice find Mike! I have never looked, could someone rebuild the frame with metal easily and add weight to it so that the parts loco could still be used? I certainly would want to make it original restored with original parts.

mike--that loco had a condition called zinc rot--where the casting deteriorates and crumbles from bad casting properties in the metal-- i have had a few to fall apart also but not many..i purchassed a loco years ago from a Florida owner who lived sea-side--the loco had zinc riot which i attributed to the salty sea air as it is corrosive--the salt air corrosion was evident on loco also

Zinc pest is caused by impurities in the metal when it's cast. It's caused by the manufacturer not properly cleaning out leftover metal from previous casting, and casting different metals in the same machine. A lot of pre WW2 cast trains suffer from it. Just Google Dorfan Trains and you'll find some info on the zink pest. Lot's of great trains have been ruined from it.

AAhhh! What are you doing with the rest of that junker?
I could use the cab, boiler, pilot, walkway and lead truck.

Here is a tender shell that was made in 1999 (MTH O gauge)
This is the condition it was in 2005 !!!

Somebody must have finally gotten mad about making 63 cents a day and took a whiz in that batch of molten metal !
MTH made good after the fact but boy did it take a long time !

Holy crap! That's some pretty bad Zamac fatigue. What happened - bad batch of metal?

Yowza, Bob! There's no excuse for that kind of failure in a modern loco. Zinc pest should be a thing of the past. Maybe you could sue Mike Wolf over it.

It is coming Shaygetz, even if I have to walk down and carry it... It sure would be warmer down there...
