In digging around in Athearn diesels I have noticed there are a number of 'dummy' diesel loco kits out there. I am unsure of their contents, but wonder how much of the kit can be used if one was to convert it to 'powered'?? ie, is it a matter of only being able to take the shell & drop it on a separately sourced powered chassis, or can more parts from the dummy kit be used?? Thanks Tanked

You can just swap the shell. (easiest way) You can also power the dummy chassis, best way is to swap the trucks as most dummy units have the same truck rather than a front and rear which will cause electrical issues unless you remove rivets and alter the truck. Motors and drive shafts will usually drop right in. Ray

I just did this today. It seems the Blue Box diesels are becoming hard to find at least near me. My LHS has a few Athearn GP 7 dummys left. I bought one and put it over a powerd chassis I bought from the "used box" at another LHS. It fit with no trouble and ran well except for an odd clicking while running. I dissambled the gear tower/truck halves and found all 4 wheel gears cracked. I replaced the truck assemblys with trucks from a powerd F7B that was on sale. The were exact replacments. I know it is a lot of trouble for an Athearn GP7 but I love the Blue Box diesels.X2F
