Ths is probably not kosher from a Tyco-collector viewpoint, but I re-painted some of the cars that were in the Tyco goodie box that someone recently gave me. They seemed too damaged to leave as is, so . . .

This Burlington caboose had the lettering all worn, so I repainted and re-decaled with MicroScale decals. Sure, the cost of the decals was more than the caboose is worth, but now I consider it presentbale so it is "rescued."

Incomplete searchlight car + incomplete UP bobber caboose = complete B&M car. Got to use up some HO decals I got by mistake once. I'm pretty sure the B&M (or any other railroad for that matter) did not have searchlight cars, buit you never know. After all, this is the railroad that DID have a giraffe car!

This was a Dairymen's League reefer with stained roof and faded lettering. I decided to go with a New England favorite. Brookside of Bellows Falls, VT. Who said less is more? Again, car not worth the cost of decals, but that's OK.

So, is this kind of re-painting a travesty, or a legitimate way to have fun with Tyco?

I think you did a great job. I have a box of cars that need "rescuing" also...

Thanks for the inspiration...

Great idea salvaging the pieces with paint and decals. I just posted an Alco in LotW that I salvaged and at least it fill a spot on my shelf and was fun in the process. It still needs work.

Nothing wrong with it at all! Though at a rule of thumb, I always ask myself first "How rare is this?" If its a BN 50' box car its a good as repainted. In the case I ever run across something more rare I'd definitely spare it.

I've repainted a few tyco things I've posted on here before.

ChrisC:

Wow - the C630 in NW black is terrific. I think this is the only railroad that actually had this model in the high-nose version. I have a scratched C630 in my stash and now I know what I am going to do with it.

I saw the work caboose in another thread. This too has inspired me with what to do with some of the other incomplete or badly damaged stuff. I have been checking out work equipment and think I can do something similar to what you did, but with a twist. Stay tuned to see if it can be pulled off.

NW was the only road to own a C630 high nose. But I am by far not the orginal person to do a tyco NW C630. Because I was inspired by this post and mine looks down right hokey next to these examples!
http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=716

For the record the NW caboose was my first big overhaul, and I ended up having to re-strip the body on it once so it took forever. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Probably do a few things different to make it look a little better, but the thing has run non-stop on the layout since I finished it and its just been great. I actually did my C630 using the decals from the NW caboose decal sheet, just trying to streach it out a little!

I'm interested to see what else you pull off!

When I first glanced your Brookside reefer, I thought it was a Branchline Blueprint model! Exceptional work, bruceclouette. Well done.

Bruce,
It's great fun to save a piece of rolling stock or a loco like you did in you post repaints. Really nice work. Sorry I missed it the first time. Get back in here and post something else :)

How does one transport a giraffe without it getting it's neck broke on overhead signs, bridges, etc. ? I wouldn't think they could transport it cheaply with all the possible difficulties involved. LOL. And do they paint the giraffe's head in white and put an Excess Height sign around it's neck?
