Greetings, Tyco fans.
The back story: A friend gave me (an O-Scaler) a big box of HO stuff owned by her step-father, who died in a tragic accident 20+ years ago. Mostly Tyco. I am cleaning and fixing them up for a friend's grandson.
Out of about two dozen freight cars, here are my four favorites: the Shop Rite, for its bold graphics and local connection; the New Haven, ditto the local connection and good looks, altho' purists will note that the NH used a somewhat different variant of these graphics on its 50' plug-door boxcars; the Wesson because my mother always used Wesson oil in the 50s and 60s and I haven't heard of it since; the Coke, because who doesn't like Coke?

Even the reporting marks are slanted on the Shop Rite...

I hate this forum...
...everytime on here when I say "I'm done buying ______ " I go out a week later and pick up just ONE more loco/rolling stock piece, etc. Though I have to admit, this one is freaking awesome lol.
Its 4 trucks of rolling destruction and you wouldn't believe how well it takes tight turns. Its from Athern. Only thing I don't like is the load is kinda generic, so maybe down the road I'll build something for it to haul.

That's a neat piece, I'd just spruce up what it's already carrying. Nothing a little bit of grime, rust, and maybe a couple of decals can't help.

Well, problem was I saw a pic of the real thing haha. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=633464
Not to mention I know where the old plant is where they use to pick up those engines from. I went there, would you believe there is a abandon flat car parked in a fenced off area with one of those huge engine loads on it just rusting away? I can't see if its the same truck style as mine though. Still I might just hit it with a wee bit of chalk and call it a day.

Hi ChrisC.
I looked at that very same car today myself. It is sweet. I would have picked it up but I had to pay for some dental work later in the afternoon. Maybe next week.
Enjoy Mike

Got a couple pairs for comparison:

For all the complaining I did about how "wrong" Tyco's BN boxcars look, your Exhibit A for how they *should* have looked (how the real cars were), is the Cox version (thanks Jeremy!) on the right.
Still, Tyco's does possess a certain charm. Looking at the way they did the herald lettering, I almost wonder if they maybe considered doing a covered hopper in that scheme. The spacing is almost right for the ribs.

I wish the blue one were Tyco - and for a long time I thought it was, I swore I saw one on a club layout at a show a couple years ago - but it's Kader's oft-forgotten clone of Tyco's tooling, as sold by Bachmann.
The Bachmann Gerber is interesting! The real Gerber cars of course were blue, and many companies have made them over the years; one can't really blame Tyco for carving a niche and giving girls their due. But look at the car numbers - seems Bachmann had Tyco in mind, by numbering theirs sequentially. But then they made a Tyco-style goof vis-a-vis a bad typo elsewhere on the side of the car! I will say the animals on Tyco's version don't look as frighteningly skeletal as Bachmann's.

| Eh, it's as worthless as any other, really. There probably isn't even a "correct" version. But the mistake is pretty obvious. Tyco's is correct.

"Gerber's Straind Vegetables"
Wow, I'm sold! Gotta get me some of those!
Maybe they came up with a new way to feed vegetables to babies, very similar to STRAINED vegetables.
Good call on those creepy animals there, GIC.

Hey ChrisC, this is kind of off the subject, but how did you make your roads? I like the way they look. Thanks!

| Just acrylic paint & old age on that one lol. Lines are done sometime by a paint pen or what looks sorta like pin striping. There is a bit of plaster building up to the road crossing on that one so I think that's giving it the textured look a little.
