I usually strip paint with a product called Chameleon. Used it many times on athearn shells. The other method, is a low pressure bead blaster.

Cannon&Company should have the part you need to make a high hood.

Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Paint removal:
Brake fluid can also remove paint...
Like some warnings, "test-spot" this method.
Do not reuse the fluid for your brakes.

John/Zebrails

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

i don't have any spare shells of any kind. does canon have a website?

to be honest i haven't started on it yet. i've been buisy working on my 65 plymouth belvedere putting in floor pans, & mini tubbing it. between that, trying to get my garage finished, & building about 1,000 feet of barbed wire fence for my grandmother, i haven't had any train time. i built a 28x28 two bay garage, with a full 28x28 upstairs. i have started setting the walls upstairs for a 14x14 room just for me. i'm going to put my trains (O gauge & HO) in there on two differant layouts, my godzilla figures, transformers i had when i was a kid, dragonball z stuff, comics, & probley my guitars up there. plus all my nascar & nhra (drag) cars. i hope there will be enough room for it all.

thanks for the link, that help out bigtime. how would you strip the paint off the athearn shell?

I soak Athearn shells in brake fluid to strip them.

'65 Plymouth Belvedere and a 14x14' train room!! Can I visit some time?

One other method you might try for stripping paint is Easy-Off oven cleaner.
Some paints it works well, others it makes a sticky mess.

Scalecoat II works pretty well. Only thing is it is a little pricey but it can be reused.

I hear ya on that one.

I'm looking to strip the paint off my Davenport, I didn't realize just how poorly I had painted it until I got around to mentioning it in LOTW again!

Hehe, thanks.

According to my parents, I've been a Pens fan since I was old enough to watch the game...I must have some distant memory of them winning back in 1992!

Anyway, getting back on topic, would motor oil maybe work for stripping paint? The only reason I ask is because that's all I have on hand.

Do you have Pine/Sol or something like 409 cleaner?

Believe it or not, I don't.

I figured there would be some PineSol around at least. I did find some oven cleaner though, and it is working quite well. I'll see if I can post a picture or two when it's done.

I'm not sure what the new paint job will be just yet...I might make up a paint scheme, or follow one of these pictures:

No, the plastic was fine. Although you might want to test a little bit inside of the shell where it won't be seen, just in case.

I was stripping an old Mantua shell, so I don't know how well it would work on modern plastics.

Here's how it turned out:

Keep in mind that it was coated in a thick, ugly green spray job before:

The remaining yellow paint is quite smooth, so I will probably just sand it a little bit and paint over top.

I've tried brake fluid and 91% alcohol, but like Matt's results with oven cleaner, they just won't remove everything. Oven cleaner is really noxious stuff, and brake fluid contains ethylene glycol, the dangerous ingredient in antifreeze. http://hpd.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/household/brands?tbl=brands&id=16007005&query=brake+fluid&searchas=TblBrands
Not to mention it reduces certain shells to putty, and makes others brittle.

I recommend Chameleon. It may be expensive, but it's safe and strips everything, plus it can be strained and used over and over.

A quick warning about strippers. (Paint, not women!)

I have tried ALL of the mentioned products and have had success. However, I have had horrible results as well. "Easy Lift Off" worked on a Tyco GP20 just fine, then melted an older Athearn SDP-40! You may need to do some experimenting with Each stripper and shell to find what will work best.

I'm not sure what else comes with the kit.
Maybe steam generator parts? Possibly diferent brake actuator levers?
I'll have to look at the parts included.

here is what i have so fare, the body hasn't been decaled or dullcoted yet.

i also meant to tell how i stripped the shell. i used painters wipes. it removed everything i could get it to touch (with a little elbow grease). also, pvc cleaner (for pvc pipe) will remove all paint in a hurry, it will make the plastic soft though. i used it just to see, & if i have to do another that's what i'll use. just have a big bucket of water around so you can dip it before it gets to soft. that seems to kill the reaction of the pipe cleaner.
