can the athearn dd-whatevers take 18" curves????

I agree with Mr. Shaygetz.
The middle two axels have quite a bit of play side to side. Lateral play.
The other saving grace of this locomotive is that the couplers are attached to the truck (usually called a Talgo truck.)
The Athearn DD40 also has metal trucks which is another plus. This DD40 has/had an option with purchase of having a single or double motor. The single motor type draws/drew less volts, allowing you to double-head your train with a second lovomotive. The Athearn DD40 locomotive did not really exist as a prototype unit. The DD35 was a prototype, but was advertized with a GP-35 on each end. I did put in an entry somewhere in this forum. Check this link for more information of your DD40/DD35:

this reminds me of a HOer he had a similar problem with his 3 train car streamliner It looked like the Burlinton Zepher Everytime it took a sharp curve the middle wheels would raise up lol
