It's been a good weekend for flea market deals. Today I went to an automotive swap meet (my other love) and low and behold one vendor had some model train items (including common Tyco freight cars new in box). I picked these up (new in box):

Not yet sure what I'm going to do with them. Perhaps I'll remove the road names and reletter them to CP or CN which is what I'm modelling. I may even come up with a fictional scenic tour name and pick up a steam engine to pull it. I'm modeling late 1950's. Any idea as to the age? One was in a "Scene Masters" box. They both have "spiral" wheels (spirals on the insides). Not bad quality.

I also scored this:

From what I've read it is from around 1974. I paid 10 bucks which I think is fair. I have the perfect siding to place it.

It's been like Christmas around here. Next week should be good as there is a huge model train show in Woodstock, Ontario, about 15 minutes from me.

Did those come with diaphragms? Seems like a neat feature for plain ol' Life-Like cars.

DON'T PAINT THE BEANO DINER!!!!!

Those are from the late 70s/early 80s. The original molds came from Varney and were eventually acquired by AHM/Penn Line.

Ok, I'll leave them alone. Ya, they came with diaphragms and they are real soft rubber. Surprising for Life Like. I'll entertain trades for CN or CP passenger cars or whatever.

I don't know why you can't paint them.

The dies on those were originally Penn Line until PL went under in 1964; Varney sold them until 1968, then Life-Like sold them. AHM was never involved. You might still find them in the Walthers catalog as a LL product. I think they're newer than the 80s, from when LL was cleaning up some of the old stuff and offering it with a more prototypical appearance.

I have a set of the Lifelike heavyweight cars also, picked up recently at a show. Mine are lettered for Southern (the sleeper is labeled Pullman). They are pretty basic, but perfect for a small layout, and look nice. No interiors, but frosted windows, so it's not noticeable. Mine didn't have diaphragms--I'm wondering if they were add-ons. Chris

I think they were Life-Like additions, there's no mention of them in the AHM/Penn Line parts list or the original Varney ad in MR.
