OK... I always figured slot car collectors were either rich beyond belief, hardcore dedicated, or simply insane, but holy crap!
I know the train is worthless. The slot track is common. I've seen these sets (various flavors of) before in fact...
...And if I thought $350 with 30 mins to go was crazy, boy was >THIS< a shock!
So really, now my interest is piqued and I am seriously curiously intrigued. What about that set is worth that much? Is it the cars (that Dodge truck is kind of cool but the Petty Superbird is pretty plain)? Or am I in the wrong "hobby"?

Tony--that is INSANE!! That is the highest i have ever seen one sell for and there have been mint in box on ebay in past also. i would like to have a few of those to sell right now . Must have been Nascar/train fan. 43 Ritchard petty was the man back in the late 60's early 80's roots of Nascar. Buyer must have a deep sentimental value related to that set for price paid

Tony, That is high for that set but 33 bids ?......... something in that set is like a hunk of gold & believe it might be the Dodge truck ? I think the Superbird is also a good a hard to find collectors piece & I say that because about 5-6 yrs ago I had a Tyco race set with two of the superbirds in it with one being a blue # 43 & am not sure what the other car numbr was but it was a white car & the set brought $150.00 on ebay which surprised me back than & the buyer had told me the cars where the reason it went so high,................. Happy Easter to All ! Abe

I think it went that high because it included that super rare Santa fe F unit.

As much as I would love to have that set, I don't think I would have paid that much. I think someone pulled his investments out of the stock market and found something else to invest poorly in and loose money on.

| This is quite a nice set compared to most on ebay. Box & everything is in really nice condition. Slot car buyers love to find rare NOS slot cars in their original packaging. I am certain it is the two sought after slot cars that drove the price up!

These are exiting times! As economic conditions worsen you will be seeing more transactions like this. Folks short on cash and holding rare items will be putting them on the block. When Tyco first released this set it was difficult to find in the stores. It was one of those HOT items everyone wanted. Petty was King and Mopar ruled! So, it's been rare from the get go! From my POV this was a cheap price for a great set!

Unreal. I've found I can relive whatever fond childhood memories I have on a shoestring.
I remember these TycoPro sets. Not to Tyco-bash, but when I was growing up, my friends across the street started with a Tyco slot car set (not this one), and they quickly switched over to Aurora and AFX equipment. The cars were beyond cheap -- the wires continually broke off the pickup shoes, the plastic front axles snapped easily, the shells were fragile, and the slicks peeled apart. They had two speeds -- off and slamming into the basement wall -- there was no magnetraction, like their AFX competition. The track joints were rough on the pins in the cars. Their slot cars and Powertorques were what made 70's era Tyco something that we learned to avoid. I came across an early Tyco car in later years that was like their answer to Aurora's high end G-Plus cars, and it was very nicely made. Not sure what year it was from, though.
It's an interesting time capsule, but someone needs their head examined for paying this kind of cash, especially in this economy. Just because it went for this amount doesn't mean it's worth it, only that it was worth it to these bidders. I've seen some pretty ordinary train items going for outrageous amounts lately that can't be attributed to anything but bidding fever, since the same item will often be going for a reasonable amount in a simultaneous auction.
They say a lot of unemployed people are rediscovering old hobbies. I hope they're not the ones blowing through wads of cash like this.
