I'm starting this post to be a spot to list where you may have seen trains at places that don't normally perhaps carry them, but have them now for the holidays...

I visited the new Menard's store in St. Joseph, Missouri yesterday and found they have a nice die-cast auto section and a small toy section.
I've never been to a Menard's before visiting this one, we have not had them in our area before. Menard's is similar to Lowe's and/or Home Depot in many ways. Here's the Menard's main page with a store locator search near the bottom of the page...
http://www.menards.com/
They did have a Lionel 027 Wisconsin Central steam engine train set, plus two different Lionel 027 track expansion sets and a freight car expansion set for the Wisconsin Central set. The main set was selling for $149. I didn't see the set listed on Lionel's web site, but I have a terrible time navigating that site myself.
Here's a pic of the set that I found on eBay...
/tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/5295_12.JPG
The other train set I saw was a Model Power HO-Scale Twin Diesel set...

It was selling for $39.98 and as you can see is as basic as basic now gets with X2F couplers and most of the pieces are "vintage" Varney or Marx knock-offs. Guess the best you can say is it is nice to still see them around, maybe? [XX(]
Again, the die-cast auto section had some cool things. There was a mid-'80s Chevy Monte Carlo SS in maroon that I nearly took home for $16.98...but already had my purchase of the day. I bought a 5-gallon air tank and valve set up to get going on my air-brush painting again.
Anyway, if you see any places stocking trains or train sets for the holidays, please list 'em here for everyone's benefit.
Thanks

Target stores do not appear to be stocking any trains in my area (Kansas City), but I do see a few things available via Target online...
Lionel Target Exclusive Train Set... /tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/B000H259AM.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS384_V61779139_.jpg/tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/B000H259AM.16.PT01._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS384_V61779139_.jpg
This Lionel Target set is selling for $249.99 and may be found at... http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-2/qid=1164724892/ref=sr_1_2/601-9952913-5441717?ie=UTF8&asin=B000H259AM
Target also has this Life-Like HO-Scale set... /tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/B000F8MDFM.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS384_V59030146_.jpg This set is again available online-only with free shipping for $64.99 and may be found at...

I saw at least one other Lionel and another Life-Like HO-Scale set on Target's website. Again, nothing in store by my inspection.

I haven't seen any other HO-Scale sets beyond this one at Wal-Mart stores in the Kansas City area, but here is what they have for $74.98...

Anyone seen anything different at Wal-Mart stores this season?

The Target I work at has the Lionel Train at $249.99 and since we have about the smallest toy area of any Target, I would think they are available company wide. If you go to Target.com you can now check availability in your own area. Since it is a seasonal item in most cases, you could play the waiting game as it would follow the normal markdown cycle post Christmas.

My last visit to Aldi's near D.C. didn't have any train sets. I'll check this coming week. Rite Aid stores have a cheap set from China, the same as last year in fact. It is a little larger than "O" I think, and battery operated for $20, though I got one last year after Christmas for $10. It came in a steam set with older style cars, and a modern diesel set with Southern Pacific stickers on it. I got it to give my child in a year or two (he's three now, and he would just destroy it.) In any case, they are nicely done for an off-brand non-standard scale set.

Bruce, thanks for the info. Saw the Lionel set...and only one in stock...at a Target in the Kansas City area today. Guess the note of being available online-only isn't an absolute rule with Target?

Check this Sunday's Target Circular and you will see the set on sale for $224.99 AND you get a $25 Target gift card with purchase. This is while quantities last so if anyone is interested, work fast.

Stopped by a Hobby Lobby store last night to see what they had in stock for Christmas on trains. Hobby Lobby, at least the ones that I've visited, normally have a modest little section of model trains all year, but beef it up a bit at Christmas.
/tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/MDP2162-450.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/MDPlogo.gif I saw the big boxed Model Power MetalTrain set with a UP F-7A, 40' Reefer, 52' Flat, 40' Tank, Wide-Vision Caboose, a few Model Power autos and a custom white die-cast tractor cab and trailer lettered with the Hobby Lobby logo on it. The Model Power MetalTrain set was selling for $149.99.
Also saw a handful of Mantua Classics 0-6-0 steamers in the neat big red Mantua box. They were $49.99 each.
Good assortment of current Bachmann and Life-Like train sets and a small assortment of B'man's Silver Series freight cars (All-Door, 50' Mech Reefer, 3-Dome Tank, etc.). The Silver Series cars were what I think is retail at $13.99. No Bachmann locos in HO-scale available separately at the Hobby Lobby I visited. Also a decent amount of buildings (mostly Model Power) and other accessories like track cleaner, etc.
From what I know Hobby Lobby is big on major discount sales across departments. For example, last night all Christmas items were 50% off and all frames were 50%. I understand that this will hit the trains at some point...probably right after Christmas you'd guess.
Those who want a deal now, can follow this link to Hobby Lobby's website and print up a 40% any one item coupon. The coupon is good through 12/9/06 and I think if you check their website these are fairly common animals to locate and obtain...

The main page for Hobby Lobby is...

While at walmart on 12-16-06 in Gastonia NC- there were John Deer train sets by athearn on the shelves in the die-cast cars section. A total of 6 sets. There were lots of people looking at these to purchase. Also while watching tv/Target commercial starts off with a christmas tree with a train set(silver passenger cars) running around it and a guy sitting beside it-looked to be o scale-not sure.

My experience on the John Deere Athearn sets with the F59PHI diesel at the Wal-Mart stores I've checked ranges in quantity from as few as 2 or 3 up to a dozen. Hope at least one survives until the after Christmas sales to make my holiday bright! [}:)]
I saw that TARGET TV commercial too!! I yelled out, "Hey they don't sell those cool chrome plated large-scale passenger trains!!!" Wonder if they've gotten any requests for them. [:)]

I've seen said Target TV spot, tis a early to mid 80s Lionel "chrome" Burlington passenger set. As mid-80s Lionel goes, it is desirable, and in the condition that one's in, (perfect) absolutly "rare" (I HATE using that term with Lionel[:D] Ollie's (a central Pa. closeout store) has LifeLike starter sets for $25.99

I really like this set but I just saw the price tag. I'm sure it is worth it, but it's a bit too high for me at this point. If anyone ever spots this below $100 please let me know.
Tony C - Same exact price at my walmart today for the J Deere set - $49 If it drops to $25 I buy. There are still 9 of them sitting there, there were 15 a week before Christmas.

I probably should have waited, but I went ahead and bought one of the Athearn John Deere train sets yesterday at Wal-Mart for $49...and I'll likely buy again when they drop to $25...if they do. [:D]
Anyway, for those interested in the contents here's a description of what I found and noticed regarding mine...
The John Deere F59PHI is nicely painted. I noticed that there are spots for handrails and grab irons, but none were included on my example. I'm guessing the Athearn RTR F59PHI offerings probably do include the railings. The John Deere example only featured the handrails around the rear pilot. Beyond that, it looked complete to me. Don't know about the drive, haven't taken the shell off and couldn't compare it anyway as I don't have an Athearn F59PHI beyond this John Deere example.
The rolling stock was also nicely painted. All items had X2F couplers, which did kinda surprise me! Would have thought Athearn would include the base McHenry plastic no-spring knuckles...my set had X2F's. Also noticed that the wheels are not typical Athearn, but are plastic axle and plastic wheels. This too surprised me a bit. The truck sideframes were a variety of styles with some freight cars having roller barings and others had older friction style trucks. The Bay Window did have the typical Caboose trucks...can't think of their name just now.
The set has the old Athearn 50' Gondola and Bay Window Caboose. An Athearn 50' Flat Car is included and it has the plastic mounts on the flat car's bed to carry the two die-cast John Deere Tractors. Also in the set in the former Roundhouse 40' Modern Box Car.
Don't know who's power pack Athearn is using, but it was a better than average one. I have thought Athearn used Bachmann E-Z Track, but this set included Life-Like Power-Loc black road with steel rails track. It's an 18" radius oval. The instructions show what I think is Life-Like's nickel silver gray roadbed Power-Loc, but again this set had black roadbed steel track.

I just left the local W-M Supercenter and checked Sam's hoping to find a JD set for $25 but there are none. I noticed they only stocked about 6 sets anyhow and that all were gone days before Christmas, but thought possibly one might turn up. They usually have several around after Christmas.

The Frankfort WallyWorld had the Athearn JD set for $50 the other night - 6 left. Probably the same 6 they'd had buried in the seasonal / lawn&garden area since Thanksgiving.
That's the only set that WalMart has this year, and to me it's not as nice as last year's. Not to mention, last year WalMart ALSO has the Athearn Coke set (which was a HOT seller), Athearn Warnbonnet, Bachmann Thomas, Bachmann Christmas, and Like-Like Santa Fe double deisel. All in the toy department, all with mixed sales success through the season. They sold tons of Warbonnets and then got a new shipment two days before Christmas.
This year, just that John Deere one, buried in a corner with no hope. Guess they lost their shirts on trains last year.

Go Figure on the possible poor sales of trains...and yet NBC was bragging on the success of toy trains recently?!?
I did look over my local Target's Christmas Toys and saw over a half-dozen of the Lionel 027 sets still sitting waiting for buyers! Target had them originally I think at $275 and they're 30% off now. Wonder if they'll go lower. From the plentiful stock at the Target I stopped at, they'll likely last for deeper discounts.
The Athearn John Deere sets were still in good supply at the one Wal-Mart I stopped in at this week. Any forum members that can't find 'em, I will keep my eye on the stock at my local Wal-Marts and will post when I see 'em go down to $25.

The John Deere set has dropped to $29.00 at my Walmart in Bethlehem, PA. There are 6 sets there.
I could pick up for someone if they really wanted one. I would have to also include whatever it would cost to ship to you. Another caveat here is that I'm still suffering the Christmas $$$ hangover, but paypal could solve that issue.
I could play the waiting game also, "How low will they go".

Down to 5 at my Walmart last night, still at $29. The Walmart-Deere watch continues.
That's a good idea for your nephew and you get some nice couplers out of the deal.

I've got one lone Wal-Mart in the Kansas City area that has any left and they have 6 or 8...but they're still $49 each. I asked a manager about the price and told him I'd heard they were marked down in other Wal-Marts.
Was told that it was the store's decision to reduce price on many items. So, I'm still waiting and watching....

| The Frankfort store FINALLY cleaned up their aisles and displayed these where they could be seen - and they were promptly snapped up at $49. Didn't get one myself - I would have if they went to $29.

It is that time again, isn't it! I've seen a couple LL HO sets at a chain called FRED'S. ($30) Big Lot's had a LOT of the battery operated sets for under the tree last year. Don't know about this year yet. I went to Hobby Lobby about 2 weeks after Christmas last year and they had all their train stuff on sale for 50% off. I've gonna pay them a visit this January again!

I've been checking my Kansas City area Wal-Mart stores and have not seen an Athearn train set this year. Has anyone else had any luck in finding an Athearn set at Wal-Mart this season?
