Shays are cool but never could figure out the wheel arrangement like 4-8-8-4 for example

Found this today--I think it's the late Slovenia-made Tyco FA. Can anyone confirm? I picked up the caboose also. There were also some cars nearby, a Tyco UP hopper, BN reefer--so maybe it was all part of the same set.

That would be hard to say, it's closer to a diesel in how its drive train is laid out. That could make it a B+B+B---but---since the trucks are not self contained drives with motored axles and are gear driven, that could make it a 4-4-4. As far as I know, they've always been referred to as gear driven steam, that covers Climaxes and Heislers as well.

0-12-0?

Maybe not...

Very cool Shays in any case guys. Gear driven steam locos are the coolest!

Got this off wikipedia, probably the closest thing they had to classing shays?
quote:
2768 Shay locomotives were built by Lima in four classes, from 6 to 160 tons between 1878 and 1945.

* Class A: two cylinders, two trucks. Weights between 6 and 24 tons.
* Class B: three cylinders, two trucks. Weights between 10 and 80 tons.
* Class C: three cylinders, three trucks. Weights between 40 and 160 tons.
* Class D: three cylinders, four trucks. Weights of 100 and 150 tons.

Note: Two 15 ton Shays were built with two cylinders and three trucks.

Twenty Class D shays were built. They were no more powerful than Class C, but had greater fuel and water capacity, resulting in improved adhesion.

Loving all the Shays in this post right now! And the Rock Island shouldn't be overlooked, kinda hard with colors that bright

I saw this Life-Like engine and could not resist...

Does anyone know the history behind it?

Hi there,

well, at least I can confirm that this Alco is from Mehano/Slovenia. But I don't know so much about their connections to Tyco....

It had to be a promo set. IGA is a asociation of independent grocery stores. It is a way for independent stors to compete with the big stores. It has been around for along time.
