Hey Ken:

See that ladder up to the door on the firemans side? I've actually climbed on that ladder with my neice Arianna.

It sit's outside the doors of the New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY. just as you say. My brother is a Professor there and parks about 100 feet from it! Small world hh!?

WHY ON EARTH NOT?!? Probably for the children to play with, or as some kind of memorial. If it is a toy, I wish they had one at MY local playground...

Not a toy guys, it's 1:1 scale! I've climbed on it. I asked my brother who teaches there and he didn't know... I'll poke around next visit...

Maybe it is a back-up generator for the Hospital.

Interesting thing about it is it's a fairly recently-used loco, not something that's been derelict for ages. It's actually an F9, which were relatively scarce enough. But this one was modernized with ditch lights and flat-facing marker lights (although the conversion quality was less "integrated" and more "afterthought"). Also note the unique horn mount. And the windshield wipers were removed...?

A Backup Generator is an awesome idea. Although still probably an expensive way to get one! I know that real railroads have done the same.

Cool locomotive-- "Rain X"-- in NC you can apply RAinX to windshield-but your wipers have to be on during riain as it is illegal to drive w/o wipers on whether you can see or not. They have wriiten many tickets in my area to individuals not running wipers and/or headlights during inclement weather--the state troopers have wriiten tickets to out of state drivers as when you enter into NC at stateline there are signs telling you if it's raining-wipers and lights must be on. SC and VA have same law also.
