Here's an interesting look at what I assume is, along with the Lionel-HO examples, the first of the HO-Scale C-Liners sold under Rivarossi's name...
Dig those front pilots...
Here's the exploded example with Rivarossi box...
Both photos come from the Summer 1958 edition of Model Trains magazine. I happened into a small collection of older magazines and will be sharing some of the cool pics and info found in them.

Believe I saw a set of these a few years back on eBay and I thought the seller claimed the models were made of "bakelight" material? Anybody have one of these early Rivarossi examples and able to confirm are they plastic or something like bakelight?

A mystery is finally explained! The reason for the non-prototypical front pilot it's a remnant of a design needed to hold the european-style coupler. Apparently use of the horn-hook coupler (At least in North America.) made the full "cowl" unnecessary, but the top of the pilot remained in further moldings.

Early C Liners used lot of Bakelite parts. Eventually AHM sold them and was built by Mehano in Yugoslavia. Wish Rivarossi continued them as the 3 pole motors are iffy.
