I remember reading about Lionel producing pink trains for girls back in the 50's...most girls then painted them black.

A very close friend of mine bought the original version of the Lionel Girls train back in the mid 90s ...He paid $5600.00 for it and he took a train from NJ to Baltimore MD to get it because he did not want it shipped and he dos not drive.
I collect postwar lionel but would never pay that much for one set...rare or not!

The Lionel Girls Train became a real collectible, because it did nor sell very well. Later on, Lionel offered a reissue (1990?) andafter that other makers followed with own versions (K-Line, Williams). K-Line even made a building set in pastel colors.
Even more odd and rare was the "boys train" which did not make it into the shops. Just a few samples were produced.

The Lionel Girls' Train is legendary, even outside the hobby. Simply summarized, they took a bath on all the unsold sets... which made the few that were sold AND unrepainted, instant unintentional "gold mines" to collectors. The concept seemingly wasn't bad in theory, but most girls who were into trains didn't want their intelligence insulted in pastel color.
The haunt had a 100% mint original set a couple years ago for a cool $7500. Sold.
Someone on ebay made a really neat HO interpretation using classic Tyco cars. I almost considered buying it... if I had that much disposable cash for a collectible. Bethany loves trains AND pink after all, LOL.

If we did things right there should be a picture of a HO girls train here, if not will try again, This is a older Tyco Pacific & Tender that is painted in the correct Lionel Pink with custom decals in blue, the box cars are older tyco's with metal frames along with a tyco gondola & caboose, not sure if the cvd hopper is a tyco or another brand, all colors are dupilicates of the lionel colors, the decals on cars were all custom made as well, the idea for a ho girls train came from my wife when she saw a Lionel girls set at a train meet for a $3,000.00, the HO version turned out to be a hit at local shows, there is set in the making now but instead of Lionel Lines on tender there will either be Mantua or Tyco in blue letters will use a correct caboose which will be a bowser,.......... to me its fun to recreate what was never made or something that is so rare it cant be touched by the working class of People,................... I know some collectors frown when they see a recreation but in my experience I see many more that like the item & look at it for what it really is, Abe

Very Nice ...I want one Abe !
As I mentioned earlier I would never pay for a postwar Lionel version...but I did have the LLC version that came out in 1991.I paid about 350.00 for it and as I recall I never opened the box....it was eventually sold off in the "Great MPC Sell Off" that I had back in 1995...but that's another story.

| Yeah, THAT's the one I saw.... shoulda remembered that was yours! Excellent work! If you need help with decals, let me know. I actually have ready artwork for the "Tyco Streamliner" lettering on the passenger cars, might be adaptable to other stuff as well.
