Marx put that out too, you may be able to swap parts in that direction as well.

I have a Marx similar to that, except it's a cupola caboose--looks like they share lots of common parts except for the body. What parts do you need?

The Varney Bay Window Caboose actually shares a lot of components with the Varney Northeastern caboose - the frame is the same except for the wings for the bay, and the detail parts were all shared with the center-cupola Northeastern caboose (from the same period) too. Since these are much more common it shouldn't be bad to find one from which the correct parts could come.

The Marx caboose is from entirely different dies and shares nothing with this car.

This Varney car could be had with plastic or die cast frame, and was sold Undecorated from 1950-61. The Milwaukee Road version was 1959-61 only - and per the guide the only roadname offered. However curiously I have a very clearly factory decorated example that's painted box car red and lettered Kansas City Southern. The book doesn't even show a Varney loco in a scheme for that road. Some have theorized it may be a special run, but I haven't run into anything to clear it up for certain.

I have an easy substitute if the marker lamps are not found...

The Athearn diesel brake cylinder has a peg you could stick into the holes.

You will also notice that the tree-nick of the cylinder has a flat but round disk perpendicular to the cylinder... you can actually have a Right and Left marker lamp. And, no one would have to point out that you have two brake cylinders missing on the truck/bogie assembly on your diesel locomotive.

Actually, I have a dozen of my cabooses with these jiffy "marker-lamps" installed. You can even paint the little disk what is appropriate for your train.

Now, if you are gonna count rivets, these little fixes may seem gawdy.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

If I make it to the haunt this weekend I will see if there's any Varney scrappers around. I actually found a Triang reefer there last week that looked like it had baker couplers... and forgot it!

Well there were a couple Varney NE cabeese, but they were either the diecast frame or pastic ladder versions, and a bit too nice to scrap. I actually picked up the lone one with metal rails, because it was for B&O and had the Mt. Clare shop stamp (Mt. Clare was later turned into the B&O Museum). But the NE caboose does not any of the extra detail parts like marker lamps. I actually recalled several bay windows - but those were all the Marx version.

I'm curious as to why the Varney bay window did not reappear in the Life-Like line?

As for the baker couplers - no luck. Turns out to be a standard Tri-ang design, I guess. They looked similar to this untrained eye, but on closed inspection are not the same. I actually found two Triang cars with those goofy things, and they cannot be removed, they are riveted to the trucks which are riveted to the frame. Dumb design IMO.

hi gic many thanks for the effort,i have found replacement ladders i think at yardbirds, thanks to erich, not in any hurry i was tempted to put kadees on the tenshodos, which on reflection, would probably be the best route due to rarity of bakers, again many thanks ken

Probably the tooling got damaged, it dissapeared a long time before Life-Like came about. I have two or three of those and only one turned up with markers - and I think maybe two out of dozens of the NE cabooses did either.
