Hey guys:
Was wondering if there was a consensus of which details added to a steamer give the biggest impact visually for the effort made?
Some of the things I had in mind were:
1) Pilot support rails (Usually on switchers) 2) Roof/Cab vent doos 3) Cut bars 4) Number boards 5) ...?
Any thoughts???

Hey Ken:
Yup I can see that. Good call! Anyone else?
One of the things I've become aware of since our Ray infected me with the Steam bug, is that at some point the detail moves beyond the point of reasonable handling! So a compromise is in order.... the question is where, or economically what will add WOW! but no OW!!!

I was referring to lack of comments on modelling steam with detail additions...
Most Tyco collectors I know have much more diesel than steam

I missed this one. What a Pandora's Box this is, Gareth, There's so many possibilities for steam details and appliances, but of course it inevitably starts a fight about whether it's prototypical for the roadname, at least on some boards...
Flying airpumps like those above on that B&O beastie are really impressive. Certain roads like Great Northern were famous for them. Another great addition is the Elesco feedwater heater atop the smokebox, which also gives them a "don't mess with me" appearance. More common details are piping beneath the running boards for the air pumps and reversing gear, which Dan from Yardbird makes for Mantua steamers, and will custom bend something for you if you ask.
If you want a good primer on steamer appliances and their placement, find a copy of the March '07 issue of Model Railroader, which has an excellent arrticle on how to detail your loco.
You gotta love American steam locos. They look more like sinister masses of plumbing designed by H.R. Giger than a mode of transportation.
