Hello,
I was looking over the new Athearn 50' Flat Car with 45' Trailers releases in this week's Athearn announcements and lamented to the owner of my LHS that these need more detail on the flatbed.
Ken found this great COX Bick's Pickle Flat Car with 40' Trailer on eBay in the UK and I shared the pic with Doc, owner of my LHS, and he agreed that Athearn needs to locate this tooling. He's forwarded the pic to his Horizon Hobby/Athearn rep and inquired about it.
Who knows? Maybe we could get Athearn to look for this mold and improve their 50' Flats with Pigs...

This is what Athearn has been offering in the RTR line in recent years. Notice the lack of detail on the flatbed...

Eh, is that the same flimsy piece of smooth junky plastic that Walthers still uses on their Trainline pig flats? I swear, the one I have looks just like that.
Sad to say, IMO they can keep it, thank you much. It's as plain as a smooth piece of stryene while making the side sills look ridiculously oversize. It doesn't even seem to fit very well - just look at the gaps.
I'd much rather that Athearn add the drop flaps and hitch gear to the standard "wood" deck. Or if that slip-n-slide cap is actually prototypical, go ahead and tool a new one that looks better.

Yep, it's with Walthers Trainline nowadays:

That one came out of a Trainline Premium RTR set, circa 1999-2000. Had a BNSF B40-7, DRGW airslide, CSX plugdoor, Clipper pig on WC flat, MilwaukeeRoad Cushion Coil Car, and Santa Fe Baywindow caboose. With Atlas snap-trak and MRC powerpack. The rollingstock boxes were unlabeled.
I think someone mentioned that Walthers ended up with most of the Cox stuff, so that makes sense. Still don't care for the pigskid myself; it's just so flimsy, and the flatcar is too nice to just glue it on. That's just my opinion though...
BTW the silver trim and hackpatch job on the trailer are my own. Back of the Clipper trailer has a service map the reminds my or R+L Carriers.
