Since I have never seen or paid attention to the metal sharks, how well do they run. Not concerned about noise ect, but smoothness of the drive. Never seen one in person to know what kind of drive system they have in them. With a decent drive and that metal shell, a power pair of A units would be an awsome puller. Mike
Still NT's, I have Aspergers.

I own one Silver colored with blue/gold stripe on nose. These run ok--mine gets hot and you need a good power pack as these monsters need power. They barley get out of the way of themselves. The original motors are similar to the MU type. AS far as pulling-not to many cars in tow. If you are looking to purchase one-they do turn up on ebay occasionally--be pre-pared to spend around $50.00+.

I have three of them, one still in the original box with all the paperwork, never assembled, to tell you the truth they set on my display shelf, ran the two just see if they ran and then up on the display..like them there..have others that I can run on layout, and yes they get a little costly...Garret "the fanged one"

Bt:

All four of those are classic symptoms of a weak motor magnet!

-High current draw
-Weak torque
-Heat buildup

High motor speed at no load is another symptom, but often the magnet is so weak that the motor can't develop enough torque to maintain a high speed, and barely runs instead.

The MU-2 design is just asking for magnet abuse. Alnico magnets are magnetized in a closed flux loop...the motor is assembled, then magnetized. Removing the armature breaks the loop, severely and permanently weakening the magnet. It can be remagnetized, with a large electromagnet. I like to replace them instead, with a stack of 1/8 by 1/4 by 1/2 flat NdFeB supermagnets, which will bring performance back, and well above the factory level! I'm still working out a method for the MU-2.

Most of our perceptions of poor-running older equipment might well be explained by deteriorated Alnico magnets.
