Above is a May 1982 Model Railroader magazine ad for the then-new GSB SD40-2.
For its time, early '80s, the GSB model was attempting to offer many features not found on other contemporary locos. I have a Union Pacific SD40-2 new in the box and it's got some interesting tooling. Many separately applied, by the end user, parts.
The truck wheelbase is, what I remember, the failing of this model. The three axles don't line up correctly with the roller bearings on the plastic sideframes. Not grossly incorrect, but not dead on. At least that's what I recall as being it's big nit pick.
What likely killed the GSB SD40-2 and maybe even the company's prospects was the Athearn SD40-2 release of about the same time. GSB had promoted their SD40-2 for a long time and did finally deliver, but Athearn rolling in with their original offering and apparently nabbed most of the market from GSB. As I recall the GSB SD40-2 sold for a bit more than the Athearn example.
This ad also calls for a Tunnel Motor SD40-2, but I don't think GSB ever delivered it. T&D Models of Albuquerque did a shell for the SD40T-2 that later was sold as part of a North American and/or Front Range example for a short time. The T&D SD40T-2 is a wide-body similar to the old blue box Athearn SD45, GP35, etc. The T&D is made to fit on the FP45 frame, I think, but Front Range may have produced a better frame for it.
GSB did do a full catalog calling for some big electrics, maybe the E33; a GP40-2; and maybe an MP15...but again nothing else as major as the SD40-2 was offered. GSB did sell some trucks and cab interiors for a time. I'll scan the GSB catalog and get it online in the future.

I have never seen one of these locos in person. But the review shows some serious flaws in the design! Low weight, low pulling power, thick hand rails etc. No mention of the mis-aligned wheel and side frame though. Also, a bit tough to build.
