I tokk these pictures today on the old Piedmont and Northern Line. CSX owns it. It has been abandoned for 20 years but is scheduled to reopen as Central Carolina railorad has recently purchased. The line is 6 miles from my house. This line has the state of NC's tallest trestle that crosses the South Fork River.
This photo taken from Cason st RR crossing.

The fall colours compliment these photos nicely, looks beautiful around those parts!
Me, I'm waiting for the snow to fall. I think the SD45's around here would look great set against white.

Nice images of an Historic Railway I cant help imagining what it looked like when the catenary was still standing!
I assume you are aware that one of the old P & N freight motors has been preserved at the Spencer shops and that there was a freak collision between a SAL work train and a cut of cars the P & N had left on the main near the Pinoca Shops that took the lives of five or six track workers

Took this pic today in Lowell NC. This is an old cross buck for a spur line off the P&N RR that lead to a mill. At least 50 yrs old. tracks are still there to mill but paved over at street. tracks aren't visible due to growth -will go back and get more photos later. Sadly the mill closed not long after NAFTA was enacted as have others along this line -- there buildings sit empty

| Those are no longer there -were installed to keep atv's off sides -- when it was abandoned over 20 yrs ago -this line became a popular place to ride trail bikes and atv's. Several youth were killed on the trestle on this line over the South Fork river. They were riding too fast across birdige and fell into river. The barricades are still in place as line restoration has not made it to that point. Will get some photo's of Bridge soon and post

| MB - The stretch of line starts in Mt. Holly NC and runs to Gastonia NC. It also runs into Mecklenburg County from Mt.Holly in which CSX still uses daily for local traffic and they do run reg freight trains as this line goes to CSX Charlotte yard off Rozzells Ferry Rd

As I stated before in this thread this is an interesting old ROW... The Piedont and Northern was originally an electric interburban line. One of the original freight motors was restored by Duke Power and donated to the North Carolina Transportation Museum and is on display in the roundhouse at tht Spencer Shops. My son Carl, lives in that neck of the woods and he sent me a map of the work being done on the ROW. All work was to be done by Sep 2009...

Brian... Carl lives in Lexington and works for Clyde and Ramona Vickers. Not really close to you but close enough to wave at yellow mixer trucks. I tried to make that map bigger but the forum will only allow me to post images 800 pix or less... The P&N has a lot of history... make a great model RR...

that's real pretty brian. there's an old railroad that went through the mountains next to where i live, but i can't find it. it's grown up so bad you can't get through there. the only way you know one was there is when it floods really bad, it will wash down a small peice of track or a wheel set.
