Hey Folks, Here are a few pics of my living room train displays. They used to be pic-a-nut shelves holding little cardboard boxes of nuts, and bolts. I repainted them to display my Matchbox, and Hot Wheels car items. Then one day I realized that my HO equipment fit perfectly,so down came the cars, and up went the trains. Does anyone else use a similar setup?

I'm sitting here ready to go to church and saw this post. I made a shelf from 1" x 4" s and luan backing that is 2' x 6' and hanging and in use but no finish has been applied. I have 7 shelves available if I use the top of the frame. I put saw kerfs down the middle of each shelf to fit the loco wheels. There is room to put 2 locos on each shelf if I want but that's tight. I'm only showing a partial shot because it needs cleaned-up a tad. My shelf is in the basement.
 Nice display Carl T.

Nice displays, guys. Mine are Showcase Express ones purchased at a flea market. They were being used for NASCAR diecast. When I looked closer I realized they were upside down and gauged for HO. At $5 a section, I couldn't resist.

Here's my main display case. Filled with Sharks and assorted other locos of choice.

I have 6 more glass-front oak cases downstairs that hold about a dozen pieces each.
Sadly I can't take credit for building any of them, as presently my woodworking skills suck. But hopefully that will change.

A case full of sharks...
These are too cool guys, maybe I'll have to build some shelves once I get some more stuff.
By the way Shaygetz, that is one heck of a find.

Here's mine--1x3's screwed together and stained, with masonite back. In the middle is my newest addition, the Chessie F-9.

Hafta admit, those shelves knocked me out when I found out what they were. I've been to Showcase's web site and still can't believe what I paid for them. As for being around me, that was one time you should have as I actually picked up twice that number and distributed them around to a couple of friends of mine...who were very happy that I have an eye for such things.

Ill throw in my two cents. I got this for a xmas gift 2 years ago. There is someone who sells them on eBay for around 80$ and you can get several diffrent types of wood. I got the cherry because it matches my furniture and thought the wife may not be as objective to it.

In addition to my homemade wall unit, I was able to buy this as surplus from my local hobby shop. It was a toy display, and while it cost me $40, it is made of solid hard wood, is on casters, and has a deep drawer at the bottom.

Hey Guys,
You got some great shelves there. Mine were made by a friend of mine for me. One for my Birthday and one for Christmas. Of course no flat surface is safe LOL!
Hope you enjoy.

What not to love about that kitten? It was the first rail road name our oldest daughter could say. By 18 months she knew kitty and chessie.

Chooch, the more I look at your shelves, the more I like that black color. I'm not sure how aesthetically pleasing they are in a room, but... they certainly set those Tyco colors ablaze!

HHHMMM....shelves....No thats a sore subject here at my house !
Quite frankly I have been told I cannot build anymore by my wife.
Still being new to HO collecting I am able to store most of my stuff in this old utility cabinet that was being thrown out at work.

I will figure out something better one day.
Here is some of my O gauge shelves

Taycotrains, I'll gladly trade all the Tyco stuff I have for your Lionel postwar. Just kidding,You have an outstanding Lionel collection there. In O gauge,I mostly collect MPC,and Marx with a few postwar pieces.
GIC,The black shelves look pretty good in our living room.(even the wife approves ) You are right about the black making the colors stand out.(I painted them to show off the color of my cars)

I picked up 5 book shelves from Ikea's scratch and dent section for $30 each. I am in the process of building a layout partially on top of them so I can display my trains and books.

Oh man, that's a great idea, to take shelves and then build a layout on top of it.

I recommend white paint, busss, to match the backboard. It will also really make whatever trains you decide to display on it, stand out.
