I have a freind of mine who has a whole lot of old 027 Lionel equipment and has no idea what it is worth. Can anyone on here direct me to a good site that is similar to the Tony Cooks web site but is geared toward Lionel?
Any info would be appriciated. Im into HO scale so im clueless about Lionel.

Hi Bud. Your best bet is to get a copy of "Greenberg's Pocket Price Guide for Lionel Trains" 2008 Edition. In this guide it will cover all Lionel trains from 1901 - 2008. If you need a book to help ID what you have, you can go to your Library for Books by Greenberg for Lionel trains. Most libraries have these in there reference section. They might even have the current price guide. The Guide should be available at most hobby stores or you can purchase it on line.

Lionel Train prices are based on Condition and rarity. Also prices go up and down like the stock market. What was hot last year can be dead this year. That is part of the reason I got out of collecting Lionel. This is some of the last things I have left NYC #2344 & 2344C and a 681 turbine The only thing I still collect from Lionel is Post War Lionel HO (1957-1966) Carl

Very true Carl !!!
and some things can "stay dead".
Case in point...
The below picture shows an array of Postwar Lionel steam locos.
The 5 on the left hand side(from the bottom to the top) are what Lionel called Berkshires. (Carl I know you know this...I am only pointing this out to the folks who never had any experience collecting these "doorstops".
There are basically 7 variations of this loco produced between 1946 thru 1964.
I started to collect all of them in the 80s and finally picked up the last one in 1995.
The prices ranged between 375.00 to as much as 525.00.

Right now I would be lucky to get 225.00 for any one of them.
Postwar is dying a slow death...people want DCS and TMCC in there O gauge trains....lights ,sounds, command control, synchronized chuff and billowing smoke is the order of the day.
Sad part is I am one of them !
As far as my Postwar Lionel collection goes I look at like a gambling lose...but I still have the "dead tickets"

BT. Nice collection you have. HO was always my Scale of Choose. But, as the years went by I would Buy and invest in pre and post war Standard and O Gauge Trains. But, I saw the handwriting on the wall back in the 1980s. Around the time you started. (maybe you bought some of my stuff.?) I had a large collection of prewar and postwar Lionel, and Everytime Lionel remade an engine or accessory from the prewar or postwar years the value of the originals went down, down and stayed down. Because I was a Lionel Value added dealer back then, I was able to see the change coming. So I got rid of it all. While the prices were still good. There are still some items that bring good money still. but, they have to be in like new in the box quality. The items I still have are more sentimental value, then money value. The 681 I have is runner repaint. I notice you have a few Turbines are they 681 or 2020s..? Can't tell in the picture. I think at this point. If you have a real nice collection of pre or post war Lionel in Excellent Plus condition, you should hold on to them if you can. With Lionel now being made in China. The Original Lionel Made in USA trains should become sort after again in the future and value should go up. Carl

Carl The turbines are 2) 681s(dupes) one a runner ,one like new. 2) 671s one with a red brush plate one with a smoke bulb 1) 2020
Back to ILUVBUDS original question on this topic...A Greenberg guide is about the only "fair" source of value.
Another way is to check "past performances" on Ebay on a specific item that his friend might have in his collection.
Carl like you in the 80s I was lucky in the 90s when I decided to sell all of my MPC and LTI trains.I sold them to a fellow out near Gettysburg Pa who paid 65% of the current Greenberg guide. That was in 1995 and I realized a lot of money.there was one caveat when doing a deal with this fellow if he already had a item in his store he did not pay 65% ( it was a lot less) I in turn was left with 4 Hudsons 2 Northerns and a Mohawk, but everything else went. Those engines eventually went when Ebay came along.
I know this much if I went to sell that same lot of trains today I would not get back a 1/4 of what I got then (1995)
