I have several Rivarossi steam engines from my dad for which I have can motors ordered to repower them. I have the cap off and it "appears" as if there is room inside to add lead weights or some kind of weight.

Anyone on the list try and add weight to the engine.....and if so how.

Thanks

Jim, there's all sorts of ways to add lead... you can use stick-on weights, moldable lead, or buckshot in crevices. I've seen some guys build forms out of 3x5 cards to contain the buckshot, then pour it in and set it up with white glue or carpenter's glue.

Just make sure that the engine is balanced front-to-back, so that the weight is evenly distributed over the drivers. You can pick the engine up by the catwalks with two fingers and find the balance point to see if the weight is concentrated too much to one end.

I have an early version of this engine with a ball bearing motor that has some additional weight on the left side next to the drive shafts and gear boxes. Later versions with the can motor had a flat, balanced weight with a depression between the gearboxes that almost looks like it was made for a can motor, except it doesn't line up with the shafts.

Are you planning to mount the new motor in the cab or the boiler?

[Edit] I was referring to the 2-8-8-2 above. Neglected to notice "Big Boy" in the thread title, but the same basic rules apply.

I flatten 1 ounce egg sinkers 'til they're about 1/8" thick, then curve them to fit up in the boiler shell. As was mentioned before, balance the load, about 3 ounces is the limit on their 3 pole motors.

Thx
