Hi Guys, I need to know where I can get traction tires for my M/T diesel locos. These are the tiny O ring type. I have about 5 engines that need 'em to get back on the rails.
Many Thanks, Carl T.

GIC, I remember that post, the bands are good for the Power Tourque motors but are too wide and thick for the Mantua/Tyco motors. I don't think Stewart makes this kind of traction tire. Do I have any other options?

I forgot I posted this before. What are you guys using on your MU-2s? I know there are operators in this tyco forum.

Hey,
Someplace else in this forum, it is mentioned that Walmart has mini-elastic bands... I think, a package of 12 for $1, somethin' around that.
In the "Stationary" section?
It is said that these things work wonderfully well.
Good Luck!
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I cut my own from silicone tubing used for aquariums. I put a piece of the tubing on a dowel, chuck it in the lathe and slice it into rings. They have to be stretched onto the wheel then sized and trued on the lathe. It is a rather tedious process, but it works.

Yeah, there's the super little clear packs you get get in the hair accessories section, not sure if it would specifically for this, but I know we've used them for trains... GIC would have to elaborate, I just know what he shows me and says, "do you have something in your domestic toolbox that would for this" [:D]

These might be worth a try. I was thinking of getting a set myself. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160092790504&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160093055076&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006

Wasn't there an envelope in the package of parts you got with some traction bands in there? I seem to remember a small plastic bag with some in there and some return springs for one manufacturers couplers?

Bob,
You are right. I remember seeing that pack, but didn't recognize the contents. That pack and most of the steam parts went to Ray M. in AZ.

| Fortunately, I do not need traction tires. I have only a couple diesels that have them. Those locos are all scheduled for rebuild in the near future. During the rebuild, the wheelsets with traction tires will be replaced. I now have a couple steamers that need tires though.

Can't help you there the package had real small ones in it more for a deisel than a steam loco. If I remember reading that post it was about rubberbands used to hold ponytails so it was probably in whatever department at Walmart that handles that, there was a picture in that post also.

| Yeah, I read that post and ran off to the nearest Walmart. Alas, both Walmarts here do not carry the package mentioned. They do carry the stuff by that maker, just not that pack. Though I can gat the right size bands in bright colors for the diesels. I may try the larger sizes for the steamers.

Locomike,
The tires I need are O ring type to fit tyco MU-2 power trucks. These are narrower than standard traction tires. Please help,I have quite a few engines in need of these tires, and they can't run without them.

SUGGESTION: Go to an auto parts store such as AutoZone-Advance NAPA--(No Auto Parts Available) and askto see their small carburetor o rings. Many carbureted engines have small orings that went into them. I have not tried this but seems like a plentifull resource for mantua traction tires. A small engine repair shop may have these also. I will check locally in my area to see if i can come up with some. I nedd a few myself ADDED 5-5-07= Just purchased some from yardbird trains. Here is picture of pkg of 2-cost per pk is $2.50

I have been using the hair bands, not Bon Jovi or that type, for traction tire replacements that I bought a big retailer. Some work well but some locos throw them. If you look around my layout you'll see some laying next to the track. May be this wouldn't happen if I didn't cowboy with the throttle so much. Some Alcos seem to just get better traction than others.

Hi All,
I have tried the rubber bands from Wal-mart but they stretch out of round and stay that way. then you get a thumping sound and the train throws them.
Thanks Mike

| The traction tires i have pictured above are for mantua driven Alco's and GP20's. Yard bird trains is the only one i know of where you can get these that fit perfectly. Brian

I apperetiate the heads up on the tires, but I'm not willing to pay what he is asking for them, that is just too much. I will continue my search for the correct size tire that is much cheaper to buy in bulk. I have a whole fleet of MU2 equipped engines that are missing tires. I don't see the value in buying all them tires for that much money. He wants as much money as I have spent on most of the locos I have bought.
Thanks again, I'll keep them in mind Carl T.

Hey Carl:
Dan who "IS" Yard Bird, is a pretty good guy. Why don't you email him and see if he can quote you a bulk order?
I'm dealing with him about truck castings for a late 50's EMD Switcher. His prices were pretty fair.
