Got my new ICG 630 in the mail today [:D] and was comparing to photos on Tony's site... when something caught my eye:

Look at the nose: see anything? (Hint: you can't climb up the nose on most 630's you'll come across, like mine below)

Yes - that shell has nose grabs. I have yet to see one so-equipped, as my scrap SF, my new PT ICG and my original-drive D&H all have lack that feature.

BUT WAIT!!! THERE'S MORE!

Look very carefully at the lug holes along the walkway. The ones under the rear radiator flare, and immediately aft of the cab, are in completely different locations compared to my PT version. Indeed, the one behind the cab looks like it's in the right location for a PT fuel tank!

But it's not... Look again, and you'll realize there are only 3 holes in the first place. And those holes are in the PERFECT locations to attach to the lugs on the original 630's frame...

Incidentally, I think that cements the likelihood that my D&H had its shell swapped along the way (not that I'm complaining, mind you)!

And that means there are at least three versions of the 630 shell: those made for the original drive, those made for PTs with Mantua tanks (below), and those made for PTs with PT tanks. All you have to do is count the holes on the sides: are there 3, 4, or 6?

I hadn't noticed the nose grabs missing on later Super630s.

Makes sense to allow for applying heralds to the nose via stickers without the grabs causing problems.

I saw a Tyco Mantua 630 Chessie at an antique shop today for $15.00. It was chipped, missing all but one short handrail, missing all but one sideframe and both coupler pockets gone and not sure about the horns oh one of the tank sides was gone. It had been messed with because there was a blue wire hanging down. When I giggled the plows to see if they were attached solidly I noticed that they were clip-ons, so to speak, and that the little box is on the bottom of each last step is part of the plow as in both of the examples above.
I wanted to buy it but thought it was too high and the discount wasn't much. [}:)]
