I collect president's choice trains. They are sold by Independent and Loblaws (canadian grocery stores) and are usually released around christmas. They are made by Mehano in Slovenia. I made a website about president's choice train sets. It should give you all the info you wanna know. www.freewebs.com/presidents_choice
-cheez

...President's Choice is not a store, it is a food company.

Does that Canadian Pacific Engine have a smoke generator in it? I've never actually seen a european company's engine painted in Canadian Pacific. Pretty cool.
Some of the President's Choice engines are also painted for Canadian National.

This is the SD-35 diesel engine from set #4 released in 1995. President's Choice only ever had two diesel engines. This one and the diesel from set #1.

Eric aka daCheez,

Excellent site on the President's Choice train sets! I've seen them for years, but had only assumed they must be Canadian due to the set's contents. Good info! [}:)]

Oddly, we have or had the President's Choice label here in the U.S. too. In the St. Louis, Missouri area the Schnucks grocery stores use or used to that same script President's Choice logo for store or house brand items. Though I've never seen a Schnucks train set yet. [V]

As far as I know, the President's Choice sets are only sold in Canada but I guess there are some exceptions. You said you used to see their products in the states...did you ever get an insiders report? This is what PC usually sends out just before christmas, usually in November. It always includes a picture of the new set. I think the first set's engine actually said PC Insiders Express on the side. If there is a set this year, I will scan the Insiders report and post it here.

-cheez

P.S. Everyone cross your fingers and hope that a new set comes out this year. Last years didn't sell quite as well as PC thought so there are leftovers in some stores.

President's choice is also sold in Chicago, at Jewel food stores (a pretty major chain in the area). But I never saw a train set for sale when I lived there (in Chicago, not Jewel [:D])

Hmm... what's with Food compainies and Train companies anyway? We had General Mills/Lionel (broke), Consolidated/Tyco(gone), and now President's Choice? Was there a combined President's Choice food-train company back in the 70's and 80's as well??

Oh and I forgot - that CN diesel is sharp looking. Looks like an SD35 to me... I wonder if it's the old Atlas shell? How does the drive system look? Are Presidents' Choice trains considered fairly serious/respectable efforts, or "toy throwaways" (in a fashion) like most brown-box Tyco?

PC didn't sell their first set until 1992. They did it I guess as advertising. All of their sets are limited addition. GoinInCirclez...I'm not surprised that you don't see the sets. Last year in the insider's report it said there were so many sets being made and they were being distributed between 500 stores in Canada. I'm not sure about the numbers of sets in previous years compared to the number last year, but I'm assuming it has something to do with Tony Cook seeing them in previous years.

Awesome news everyone!! The PC Insiders Report has arrived and there WILL be a new train set this year!!! Please visit my site

www.freewebs.com/presidents_choice

The new set called the "Big Ten Express", includes nickle silver track rather than the traditional brass and the locomotive features RP-25 wheels. That's all I can tell you from the article in the Report.

GoinginCirclez-yes the CN is an SD-35. I have never take the drive system out, so I can not tell you what it looks like, but it is very heavy and powerful.

-cheez

BTW, what are RP-25 wheels?

Well, I just went to Loblaws and I saw it. The Big Ten. It is a black CN steam engine with 2 guide wheels, 10!! driving wheels and 2 trailing wheels. The set includes 5 CN ore cars as seen in sets 5 and 9, and a red PC cupola caboose. The engine and tender both pick up power. They had the train set up but the the track had come apart and the engine was derailed. When I try'd to put the track back together, the engine started up, despite the fact that all ten drive wheels were off the track. If you haven't already seen it, check my PC website. I scanned the insiders report.
