Is anyone collecting Tyco Automatic Hoppers? A friend of mind was looking for these and since I already had quite a few of my own, I started filling in the blank spots. Problem is, and this was a real shock to my system. some of those I'm missing are selling on Ebay for over $50. Without the box! I was interested in how many folks on this forum were actively collecting the automatic hoppers. I also collect other manufacturers such as Athearn Metal, Varney, Silver Streak, Ulrich and Ambroid. The Brachs hopper has always been the rarest and most desirable of the operating hoppers. It rarely goes for less than $50. It was only made for a couple years and features a three-color paint job on the hopper cap - other so-equipped cars were simple monochrome jobs.
That Peabody hopper is NOT original Tyco. It is a custom job. The dump gates and brakewheel were painted - Tyco never did this. Also, the original auction had a view in which the lettering was visibly misaligned... not by much, but enough to give it away. There have been a few custom Peabody hoppers to crop up in the last year or so and they do look very good, whoever made them did a great job. But they are not original.

Hi RAN and welcome to the forums.
I edited your post to correctly display the images you uploaded. There is a bug I'm working on with the file extensions. Please use lowercase file extensions. .jpg works but .JPG doesn't work as intended, it's been driving me batty for about a year now. Also, when you upload the image and the forum replies that the upload is complete you can click a link that will automatically insert the image into your post. We have a testing forum if you want to play around with that.
GIC is correct about the Peabody car, that's a custom paint job and I have to say that it looks really nice.
There are also two versions of the Brach's paint scheme which most people are not aware of that fact. I found this out only this year myself.
To answer your original question, yes I do collect the operating hoppers and have just about all of them. I even have one that nobody here has ever seen before except for the pics I've posted. It's basically an error from the factory and all the lettering is shifted a panel to the left on the blue B&M model, and it was done on both sides. I guess that would make a 3rd B&M variety.
There is a site that is pretty thorough but not complete, it stands as a good guide for the operating hoppers.

Todd,
You talking about the White versus Yellow print on the Brach's hoppers? Those are the two variants I'm aware of. Hard to get as those suckers are, I only have the Yellow version... and it's missing the roof (although I intend to make one).
I have three panel-print variants of the B&M car.
There are also tooling variants on the Virginian, Holly, Spreckels, and Monon cars. Monon also has a paint shade variant (Dark versus Light-Yellow Orange).
AND there are some very rare promo-only versions too! Think in the vein of that Alcan Center Flow... same concept and rarity but different names I can't recall. I do not have any but have seen legit photos of them.
