Hello Again, This past Saturday I purchased a Blue/Yellow Santa Fe C430. After checking Tony's Tyco Resource I foung a photo of the same loco as mine. My question is,did this unit come with handrails? The seller I bought it from has two available, one with rails, and one without. I bought the one with the handrails because it was in better condition, and wanted to know if is's original.
Thanks, Carl T.

Carl, Yes, your "Blue Bonnet" SF 4301 Alco is probably original if it has the handrails applied imo. I don't think metal handrails were applied at the factory but some owner did. I bought one from ebay that way and one without rails. There are 2 examples of Alcos on the bay now that show them with rails, a VRG "big stripes" and an RI from the same era. I'm pretty sure at some point Tyco stopped sending handrails with some Alcos and even some catalog photos and box art lack rails.

All the other Tyco road-switcher diesels were converted to plastic handrails by the late 70's... but the 430 never received this change. Best I can tell, old stock of metal handrails was used until sometime in the mid-80's. I bought a new-in-box Virginian 430, in the "dark" 1982+ brown box, that still included handrails. The blue Santa Fe 430 was made for 1982... so it also probably included them.
Somehow I don't think many train-set units of the era included handrails though.

Here's an auction photo example of box art with no handrails on the loco.

Ken , That's a Mehano Tyco and the handrails are a molded on part of the chassis. The box art is a GP20 and the loco in the box is an C430. Interesting all the way around huh. I couldn't find this pic for the 8/6/08 post on this topic. Hypoponera has gotten me interested in the IHC/Mehano C430s.

Ken, The one I have has broken handrails that I tried to repair and disguise as original. Is someone still making them and are they improved a bit power wise?

I wonder if any of them actually say Tyco on the bottom?. That would be neat!

Ken, They've "come a long way baby", as the old commercial used to say. The diagram is more complicated than I imagined.
