GIC built one of those. It's pretty cool and really neat to see your layout on track level.

Hey MRS. GIC:
See I would have thought he would be too busy working on a Mid-80's Nuclear Thunderbird!? [:D] [:D] [:D]

I've always wanted to build one of those. A Tyco F-7 dummy would probably work well...those things are nearly hollow inside[:p] It would also be fun mounting one in a dome observation car. I must try that some time[:D]

Funny you should mention that as I did that very thing about 5 years ago. [;)] I mounted it on the truck and cut a slot in the nose so that it could pan back and forth with the track....

Sadly, the camera met an untimely death when I accidentally crossed the polarity on the battery...sigh...

| Hey Shaygetz. Clever design. I was thinking more of putting it behind the cab window (you'd be able to see the window frame and nose so it would be like an engineers view), but that's neat how yours can pan with the curves in the track. Where did you get the camera from?

Great pictures Romcat, a camera would save me from laying my head on the layout to get a good look. [:D] Damn ballast sticks to your face.

Thanks, the position came from experience. It just felt more realistic at that level. The nose or roofline would create a fuzzy "hemisphere" that I didn't care for. The best effect I felt was to aim the camera to the track about 3 feet in front of the engine. The pan really worked well and help take away the "thrown from side to side" effect as you approached a curve. The camera came from www.wirelessmicrocolorcam.com.

...of only I had a wide-screen computer monitor...
Have a great day.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I like the creativity that goes into the various "cab/track cam" designs.
AFAIK, I'm the only (maybe first?) one to cram a camera into the engineer's seat of an EMD for a "prototypical" view - which was my design requirement:

The camera is a full-color wireless job I got brand-new in 2006 for $40 shipped on ebay - one of the best deals ever. The LLGP38 was a virtual freebie. Trouble was, when threading it through the dynamic brake fan, I stonefingered the antenna and broke it off the PCB, so the signal is a little fuzzy since my solder repair.
The signal receiver is connected to the TV card in my PC.
Not only is the engine pretty cool to run, but since it is so well hidden it could theoretically become a good spy or "nanny" cam.

That is way too cool! And you say you got the camera for only $40? Sweet deal!
I've been known to mount a digital camera on a flat car facing sideways. Just make sure there's nothing too close to the track.
