Why did Southern have Alco type trucks on EMD GP35s? This engine works now for W&LE.

Hey Bud:
Good eyes, poor spelling! It's "Geeps" from GP-General Purpose.

Thanks Fellas! It's interesting to think the loco needs replaced but the trucks and traction motors are still usable. You'd think the trucks would need replaced too. I know that happens with rolling stock rebuilds like the NS Top Gons.

| Alco apparently had good trucks, traction motors, and other electricals. Where they seemed to fall short was with the prime movers. For example, railroaders really liked Alco RS's rebuilt with EMD diesels, as they got the best of both worlds, and felt they would outperform a stock EMD Geep.

The Soo Line was a purchaser of many GP-30's... But they were built with ALCO trucks from trade-ins. Then, Wisconsin Central Ltd kept the GP-30's for a longer stretch of time. The only thing new on the locomotives was the paint scheme.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

One reason I have read was that the Alco trucks were equiped with GE traction motors. Those were viewed as being far better then the comparable motors from EMD. So a road would want to have the GE motors rebuilt and reused. Thus they save a few buck by reusing the old trucks and keep the better motors.
MP had a ton of their GP18s running on Alco trucks.

The FA's were locomotives built by GE and ALCO. I believe the same went for the PA's as well. $O.O2 CA JZ
