There are so many offerings that aren't nearly as expensive that run as good or better---or---do ya jes' gotta have a brass piece?[:D]
My taste was satisfied with this PFM/United C&S Mogul...now I don't get the DTs---or is it BTs---whenever I see brass. I just tell meself, "Self, ya already gots one." Then I'll good for another year or two..[:p].

Hey SG:
You're dealing from sense there. For me there are just things I want that don't appear in plastic.
A Milwaukee Bi-Polar for example or an Alco RS-23 or a 2-8-2T Minaret. It's a small list. I debating about the New Atlas HH660 due out next year. There are brass versions. I kinda prefer that over an Atlas made in China, Taiwan is fine but too much money going to China.
I also think of Brass as pure display collectible for the most part. The affordable ones are mostly `70-80's and the mechanism's aren't great. For example the Custom Brass Bi-Polar is onlt powered through 4 wheels! Thats just sad!

| hi gareth my question was to find out if there is a sd40-2 in brass that is unequalled in all respects at a sensible price, not to be stupid, and pay hundreds for a model that looks no better than a lifelike loco ken

Ken, most of your brass today is very carefully engineered, unlike the offerings of old like the Bi-Polar Gareth refers to. They are fully lighted and made to follow specific road numbers---very well done---I'm sure you'd be pleased---if not somewhat cash strapped---with any recent offerings.

If I could afford one, it would be a model of the Virginian 4-8-8-8-4 Triplex that Olympic put out some years back with no less than three can motors driving each engine.
Many years ago a manufacturer accidentally put out a run of brass with 1.5 volt motors installed. When the recall was issued, less than 10% were returned, nailing the notion that most were purchased by collectors anyway. Now they just had one more reason to keep the particular model.

Here are some references to old brass, not sure if the engine you are looking for is listed or not?
http://www.hoseeker.org/misccatalogs.html - Hallmark, Sunset, etc. http://www.hoseeker.org/balboa.html - Balboa http://www.hoseeker.org/njc.html - NJ Internationaal http://www.hoseeker.org/otherhotrains.html - Katsumi, International Models http://www.hoseeker.org/pacificfastmailinformation.html - Pacific Fast Mail http://www.hoseeker.org/tenshodo.html - Tenshodo http://www.hoseeker.org/westsideinformation.html Westside Models
There is more brass listed at the site for referencing then I listed here.
