This engine ever make production? Preproduction samples were displayed at 1962-era hobby shows, per pictures in an RMC of the time. I've never seen one, just like the Revell gas station shown in the same show coverage. But then again I've only seen one or two of the Lindberg SW600, too - they're pretty scarce, I'd imagine a lot of parents threw them out when the rubber bands broke.

I have never seen a Lindberg U25B. I have a Lindberg SW600 with a wire spring. Did some come with a rubber band?

I have a catalog coming. Maybe I can learn more.

This is an eBay photo. I don't know the rules about putting those on here.

I have a picture of the pre-production Lindberg U25B, but I'm not locating it right now. I'll look for it.
The story I have heard is that Lindberg had the tooling for the U25B shell finished, but the drive/underframe never came together for them.
Lindberg sells off its model train line to a company/person in Florida, I think, by the early '70s...Sunshine-something maybe was their name. They issue a little 2-bay hopper that was Lindberg tooling. Lindberg's kit and RTR cars were dumped into places like Woolco around 1970...hence the many examples with the red 88-cents Special burst sticker on them.
The Lindberg tooling shows up later in the '80s Manuta line, but the SW7 does not re-surface...neither does the never issued U25B.
I inquired with one of the Tyler's of Mantua at the 2000 Chicago Hobby Show about the U25B shell and he was not familiar with it and didn't think it was among their former Lindberg items.
The only Lindberg catalog in my collection is available online on my site...

Picked up a Lindberg SW600 yesterday, it was cheap and complete, and I see they used a spring rather than a rubber band in them. What a strange drive with the big gear inside the loco cab.
Looks like they never did get the U25B going if they were still showing it as pre-production 5 years after they came up with the shell.
