I have a Tyco HO Scale Steam engine from 1977. The Chatanooga Model. Is there anywhere that the engine can be sent to get the electric motor in the coal car repaired? Does TYCO exist anymore in the train capacity? I live in Southern California but I would send it anywhere to get this thing repaired. There's a lot of sentimental value in it. Thanks.

Hello

There's no official place available, that I am aware, for TYCO service. TYCO dropped out of HO-scale model trains after 1993. The Chattanooga steam engine is a common model produced in big quantity by TYCO.

Some advice on attempting to get it working again would be to search local train swap meets and eBay.com auctions for a similar TYCO steam engine. The motor/truck can fairly easily be switched out and replaced. I'd guess you might be able to locate another TYCO steam engine without a great deal of effort or cost and then provided it functioned well trade out the motor/truck assembly with your original Chattanooga steamer.

The only thing to be careful about is that you've found a similar model. If you're Chattanooga is a late '70s made 2-8-0, you'd want to stick with finding one of that variety. Older and later production runs can yield differences in design that might make switching out parts impossible.

Weertog, If you're Chattanooga is the same as my 'smoking' Santa Fe
2-8-0, it may not be your motor that is bad. There is a big plastic gear
on the side of the motor(in the tender). It meshes with a small metal gear on the motor shaft. I had to replace the bigger plastic gear twice way back in the late 70's due to the plastic gear stripping. A local hobby shop had to special order the gear(from where i don't know), this would take several weeks before i would get the engine running again. This Hobby shop is long gone(20+ years). After the second replacement gear
stripped, i packed the engine away. It was not worth the frustration of
trying to fix a poor design. Good luck in your repair job.

On a related note, of 4 Tyco engines i had in the 70's(2-8-0, 0-4-0, Alco super 630, EMDF9) only 1 is still in running condition(F9).
