Is it ground coal poured / pressed into a mold (is that even possible)? Or is it really carved out? The only coal I've ever held was pretty brittle and could not even be carved in relief, much less 3-D.

Anthracite, found around where I grew up is pretty stable and carves nicely. You see all manner of things carved from it in Pennsylvania. Bituminous is much softer, maybe that's the one you're familiar with?

Yeah I think that's it. Was never much of a coal geologist... Even if I live near Eastern KY, I still need to betray SOME of my Chicago background from time to time... [:D]
Very impressive work in any medium though!
