I bought this caboose a while back and never bothered cleaning it up as the shell was glued down to the chassis. I finally scraped the glue off and got the shell off. Now that theres no glue smeared all over the ends it actually looks pretty good. The only problem now though, is that the shell doesn't stay on the chassis (guess that's what the glue was for [B)] ). It has a tab at one end, but how am I supposed to attach it at the other end?

The inside of the shell says "Mantua 2227"

Cheez, That looks like a lighted caboose chassis. You might light it too.

Here's a custom Tyco center cupola PRR style caboose a guy gave me at a train show. It's body is held on only by a tight fit. It has worked fine until I pulled it apart.
I looked at a Mantua PRR caboose today and I noticed it has a tab on one end and 2 on the other holding the chassis together. Cheez's has only one tab. I think I've seen them with a single tab on each end.

AF: The caboose has a tab at the back. The chassis has a hole for the tab to fit in. Theres no tab or hole at the other end though so I don't think anything is broken off. I have seen cabooses that had tabs at both ends, but this one only has it at one end.[B)]
Ken: You're probably right about that. I've taken ladders off cabooses before and I remember how tight some of them were. They definitely had enough strength to hold the shell on.

All of the Mantua / Tyco streamline cabeese I have ever looked at, have the tab at one end centered under the door. The other end has two smaller tabs just on either side of the door. The best way to disassemble them is to push the center in, lift that end up and rock the shell out of the chassis. To reassemble, insert the end with two tabs first, then rock and lock the single tab into place.
Sometimes, that single tab is a VERY tight fit. I have broken a couple when trying to disassemble them. Sometimes friction is still enough to securely hold the shell in place. If not, a sparing application of glue (even white glue if you're concerned about future removal) should do the trick.

Hello, If you look at the picture you see a plastic tab on bottom ( beneth the door on left end ) of body which fits in the hole in the frame & there should be two holes on the other end of frame also, I think the two tabs are missing on the other end of the body which naturally would fit in the two holes in frame, this is how Tyco designed the body to fit on frame, a sort of a " snap" fit, when removing body these tabs are usually broken off of body & usually it is the single tab, I have broken them my self from time to time as I usually use a small thin bladed screwdriver to push the single tab towrds inside of car which pushes the tab past the slot in frame & than slide another small screwdriver between the cab & frame ( under the door) & slowly pry upwards, when the tab frees it self from body the front tabs will come free, if broken I use a small amount of silicon under the cab & put it all back together & it usually holds, not sure my way is right but it works for me, Good luck......................Abe

There should be 4 holes in the frame for screws or push pins to go into the 4 holes in the bottom of the shell.

If you do light it and need to open it again, instead of glue use double sided tape.

| If you have a box car from the same era, you could borrow a screw from it.

Hey Tod. Thats a good idea, but I dont have any Mantua freight cars. I wonder if hardware stores would have screws small enough for this. I should look into that cuz I have several engines and streamliners that need screws as well.

Cheez--you need a 2-56 screw to fix. Your local hobby shop should carry these. A mom and pop hardware might have then. I doubt Lowes or Home Depot would have them-do not remember seeing any this small when i was there. I know athearn sells these in a pack of 20 i think as i have purchased a pack.
PS tod513--you need to fix that close up photo as it it throwing the page off by 2. The reply box is off the page all the way to the right

Use your photo editing software. Change pixels to a smaller setting-then save and repost.

Brian: I'll check a hardware store next time I'm near one. I don't think we have Lowes...we have Rona and Home Depot.
Tod: If your too lazy like me to figure out how to use photo editing programs, or u have a really crappy one, just put the picture in Paint and then at the top of the page go either "image>sketch/skew" or "image>attributes" and you can adjust the size.
