Hello,
I just joined the group and am looking forward to learning about Tyco, and other manufactures of interesting toy train models. My primary interest is Frisco. Thus, I am trying to collect at least one of all Frisco models made by the different toy manufactures. I have started with Tyco, which does not appear to have produced many Frisco toy trains. I have the Frisco auto loader, Frisco Spirit of 76 caboose, and two other cars, one of which I have a question about. I recently purchased a SLSF 16037 box car with ‘another carload of Norge Frosty Flame gas refrigerator’ billboard on the side of the car (unfortunately there is not a box). I have always thought this to be a Tyco car, having seen it advertised as such on eBay, but can not find a Tyco marking on the car. All it says is, ‘made in Hong Kong’ on the bottom of the car. Does any on know if this is a Tyco car? The other car I have is a Frisco refrigerator car.
Does anyone know if there are other Frisco cars made by Tyco?
Thank you, Jerome Fort Worth, Texas

To my knowledge you already have the only two Frisco cars that Tyco made: the Autoloader, and So76 caboose. There are two versions of the caboose though: one has a built date, the other does not. ( Incidentally, the loco that "matches" the caboose is based on a Seaboard Coast Line prototype. )
I've seen the Norge boxcar a few times on ebay and it is NOT a Tyco car. The tooling on the roof gives it away, it extends higher above the carsides and not as peaked. To me, it looks more like early Life-Like / Varney tooling, but I am not certain. I have never seen it properly ID'd.
A lot of rookie / lazy ebay sellers list any random train under Tyco, because it is such a famous (or infamous, depending on one's outlook) name. All Tyco cars have the name Tyco (sometimes Mantua) embossed on them however.
*EDIT* Well, seems there are two more on ebay and this time the sellers claim they ARE Lifelike / Varney. Given the better photos, I have to agree. Different colors too... haven't seen the red one before.

Hello Slsfrr....I recognize your "handle" from another forum. I think I've spoken 'topics Frisco' with you before, especially in regard to the QA@P. Welcome to this board....it really is a good place to discuss not only Tyco, but other vintage, and just about anything that hits someone's mind.....a lot of good folks here. Tyco didn't have much 'pickens for Frisco as stated above, but when I "play" with my vintage childhood-era trains, I use some imagination--Santa Fe and UP standing in as run-through power, example. Going just a bit off the ranch, Mantua had a nice 2-8-2 lettered for the Frisco in the late 80's/early 90's. It had a matching caboose (Mantua, of Lindberg lineage). I've attached a pic of one of my recent finds, an extremely old Varney all-metal kit painted for the Frisco.

Thanks for the reply’s guys!
I saw the two Norge cars on eBay. The one advertised as Life Like is what got me wondering what I had purchased. There is also another guy selling the Norge car who list’s it as Tyco. (It is a buy now). The other car I got on eBay is a Frisco/GRAX 40 foot refrigerator car. I emailed before I bid and the guy said it had Tyco on the bottom. We shall see!
I have the Mantua 2-8-2 and caboose. I believe there was a flat car that was painted red. The Frisco did have a caboose similar the one Mantua sold. However, only one and I believe it came from the Northeastern Oklahoma RR when the Frisco purchased that railroad. I am in the process of detailing the 2-8-2 with grabs, air lines, etc. My goal is to make it look like a Frisco 4200 with out major surgery. The Mantua 2-8-2’s are actually nice runners, manufactured stock with a can motor and fly wheel. Unfortunately, the drivers are not NMRA and the two centered ones are blind.
Take care, Jerome

Adams,
That is a nice Varney Frisco box. It even has the right series number! A very nice find for a Frisco collector.

| Jerome, upon further cogitation, I thought of at least 3 more Frisco "toy" trains that I remember from the 70's and 80's, and still see at shows sometimes.....1) Mantua had what I think they called a "41-foot" steel boxcar--it was part of their "heavies" line. In that same line, Mantua had a composite coal hopper. The box was a sort of tan, with the FFF logo, while the hopper was black. Also, in the 70's, I owned a cylindrical covered hopper, obviously foreign (AHM, maybe?). It was yellow with black lettering. Also, I've seen a foreign Frisco car that all I could describe is that it is a yellow flat w/ SLSF lettering, and racks on top--maybe it held those silver helium cylinders at one point, not sure. If you want to go into 'toyish' locos, remember the GP-18 in a really dark red/white scheme (old Atlas or AHM?)? I was thrilled to get one, since nobody back then made anything in Frisco, until it ran herky-jerkey and died after a few days! And, oh yes, some foreign mfgr. did make a Frisco orange boxcar (mid-70's). I'm sorry I have no more specifics, but I'd be willing to bet some others here will come along with some elaboration.

Here's a few Frisco items...
Life-Like 40' Box Car

AHM Flexi-Flow Hopper

AHM GP18

AHM Extended Vision Caboose

Revell Cable Reel Car

The '70s Lionel-HO line included a gray Frisco 50' Box Car that was neat looking.
Believe there's a Model Power and/or IHC 50' Combination Door Box car in Frisco.

| Yeah, you are right about the Frisco norge boxcar. I own one fo these cars too. Mine is in the box thatv Life Like had before the blue boxes of the late 70's. I also have the AHM Frisco GP-18, the yellow flex flow hopper, along with about four of the W/V cabeese, one is in its original box. AHM also made a yellow pulpwood rack car which I have two. One is loaded, while the other is empty for staging purposes. As for the Lionel HO plug door, I have the tan version. Other than the Autoloader and the Spirit of '76 caboose, Tyco never made any other rolling stock for the Frisco.
