I've noticed that on some PT's the large gear on the unit has a ridge on it just inside the gear teeth that rides against a scraper that is cast into the truck frame. Other times the PT gear is flat and there is no scraper holding it in place. I have an ALCO 630 with a ridgeless gear, but it also has a scraper that makes contact with nothing. Did a previous owner substitute the wrong gear at some point? The center of the gear is loose enough that it tilts when running forward and rides up on the pinion on the motor shaft, making an awful buzzing noise. I fabricated a brass keeper to hold it in place and that quieted it down, but it's still louder than usual. Just wondering if this is even the right gear. Should I be able to remove the gear easily without pulling the pinion?

Thanks!

Brian
