Just a quick question here. I am seeing the run-up in prices on ebay auction 200189199791 and for the life of me I don't see what the attraction is. Its a nice lot, but not nearly what the bids are. Just curious... Is there something super rare in this lot?

Thanks.

Just two newbies having a p!$$!n@ contest on each other. Hilarious. If they are new to Tyco AND ebay, they'll soon realize how stupid they are. [B)] But, I can't say I never got excited on occasion so hey, whatever.

The Maxwell House center flow is a $30+ car by itself. The SeaLand piggybacks can be scarce but not as high. Everything else should normally be easily had for under $10... if not $5.

Of course, all the DTD stuff yesterday went for much higher than I expected... $20 for a Boraxo? $70 (!!!) for a Tropicana pig? [:O] So who the heck knows?

I think I'll stick to picking them up at a yard sale for $10 a box.

The label is legit and correct; I have several other cars in that style, including several Tropicanas. My research in to boxes has me thinking that this style label was used from 1974 thru 1977 or 78, primarily on items that were shipped from Hong Kong. Notice the Times New Roman font is the same as on the subsequent direct-printed and orange labels.

I've made an observation, regarding what I find to be fascinating and inexplicable behavior regarding ebay and prices.

In the last few months, 3 very sizeable collections have been broken up on ebay. The first was one in PA that went out about 2 months ago; I bought a few cars. The second was in FL from a seller called "Lionel98", who is STILL parting out that collection, and worked his way down to redbox. He had a TON of rare brownbox previously. I bought some stuff... he is a GREAT seller BTW... packs VERY carefully and ships fast. The third is the DTD auction.

In all three cases, the collections were listed almost in their entirety at once, broken up into individual cars or small related lots. And in each case, the prices went way higher than what you see when Joe Schmoe lists a random car or two that is otherwise identical. I don't know if seeing a whole catalog gets people all excited... or gives a seller more credibility, or what???

Yes, this one has had me baffled...

http://cgi.ebay.com/HO-SCALE-LOT-OF-22-ASSORTED-TYCO-RTR-FREIGHT-CARS_W0QQitemZ200189199791QQihZ010QQcategoryZ19140QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I looked and looked at it yesterday, trying to determine what I wasn't seeing.

Considering some of the gems lurking in Dan's other auction groups, this one's price is beyond reason.

Ah well, that's eBay.

And the losing (errr... winning) bid comes in at $382.00 Whew. Hey, if it makes him that happy, more power to him. I can't see getting that much enjoyment from them though.

If all I need to do to get insane money for plain Tyco, is write the word "sample" on some Tyco boxes... I'm there. I mean, I have enough a collection to net a down payment for a house that way. Incredible!

There wasn't anything special about those so-called "samples"... I mean the coke tanker wasn't even the unseen catalog example that said "Coke". I really don't think DTD knew anything or got any info from this guy at all. They certainly weren't too helpful (polite, yes, but not helpful). The ONLY truly notable item that could have been a sample in that entire auction, was the silver streak caboose... and they didn't even catch that. At least the dead ateam sharks had a letter that could lend authenticity.

Oh yeah... and the "Burlington SD24 with decal"... um, they ALL came that way... in fact most Tyco locos have decals of some sort.

I had to laugh at the "ssample" markings as well. I found it funny that the "samples" had printed endflaps with catalog numbers.

So much for my theory that he was hurting himself by listing so much stuff in one week. He managed to create quite a furvor, even though only a few of the lots had anything of any value compared to what one might find regularly on ebay. I lost out on the double Canada Dry, and I thought I was being ridiculous with my bid. I only have a few pieces that I can fit into my display, so I could get a little aggressive because I know my spending will end soon.

Now... let's hope that some folks out there see the prices and decide to start listing some of those rarer items. That we be good for all of us, as I think this was just a mob frenzy that kinda got out of hand and artificially inflated the prices.

Maybe I should list my Slice of Woodbury so I can quit my job. :)
