Hyponera asked me recently for some pics, and enough others have inquired over the past year, that I thought it was time to round up in one place.

So here are mostly new pics and a few old ones. They are rather large; if people have trouble viewing them PM me and I will try to upload smaller ones in place. This was all I had time for at the moment.

--------------------------------

First, some bird's-eye shots:

^ Downtown

^ West end

^ East end

As you can see, the track plan from the original MR Red Wing layout is intact... as are a few of the downtown building foortprints. But all the rest of the scenery / industry is my own interpretation.

I changed the road exit from the west end, used a Wathers Cannery as a huge (for this layout) scene... and replaced the factories on the original Red Wing with a Cement Plant and a truck terminal (the latter should be no surprise to those who know me, ha ha).

In addition, I extended the downtown block west slightly, and emebellished the Red Wing's hill by making it taller and carrying it completely to the NE corner of the layout, to get a cool canyon-cutout effect for the roadbed, and a sheer-cliff (with overhang) facing the downtown area.

The NW corner is the yard, which is a little crammed in behind the "canyon cliff" but looks cool, and is a good place for expansion. In fact, I have one piece of flextrack (where the Chessie units are) that is not even fastened down yet!

I like how the downtown in that picture, looks fairly distant. Too bad I didn't have a proper backdrop set up.

In the past year I haven't done a whole lot new to the layout, as it is mostly "done". (this has afforded me the ability to be able to collect Tyco, lol). But I am slowly adding details to scenes and trying to improve scenery. And keep the cobwebs off.

The layout is wired for standard analog cab blocks supporting two-train operation... as well as DCC. At the flip of a switch (or three) I can run all-analog, all-DCC, or both at the same time (on separate blocks). I figured that one out myself, wish I took better notes!

Here are a few more older pics of other scenes, a shot of the STC's not-yet-repainted ex-ROCK #7672, and the as well as the overall presence of the layout in the room.

Hi GIC:

Couple of questions. I like the Red Wing as well and I thought I'd be interested to hear why you chose this trackplan. Also why did you make the changes you made and how do they relect on the proto-freelance "Ducky" (St.Canard) Or is the obverse true. The Ducky is this kind of RR therefore the layout needs to reflect that character... Actually maybe we should move that discussio to the layout section?

How's Baloney doing????*

Cheers,
G.
*= yes I know she has a real name now but what's more "real" than baloney! [:D] [:D] [:D]

Glad I asked! Outstanding layout!! I like what you did regarding the hill. The cliff face looks very convincing. I really appreciate the photos that show more then a single scene. I wish MR and RMC would show the layouts as a whole. I want to see how the layout looks in the room. By the way, what better backdrop is there then "Beavis and Butthead"?

Ooh boy lotts of questions and comments! Thanks all.

First off... mom and baby are continuing to do well... although my mother-in-law has been a big help. It's because of her that I can sneak some time for this stuff, so I'm trying to enjoy while that lasts. Baloney is a lot like her big sister in some ways, but different in others. But she's a sweetie all-around.

Anyway, now onto business:

1) The CSX "patchout" #6796 (which I assume Brian was referring to) in the very first locomotive I custom painted, back in around 1993. I had an article printed in MR's Student Fare column around that time, inquiring about that locomotive. I recently touched it up and added other details as my skills improved, and it is one of my favorite models... if a little modern for my era.

2) The LPB's on the roof are a stock Woodland Scenics "roofers" set. That is one are I am lacking detail - building roofs. I hope to rectify that eventually.

3) As to the Rasions de Sainte Canarde:

- The name is "borrowed" from an early 90's Disney cartoon my younger siblings would be watching when I got home. Disney of course used it for the "duck" reference, but I also like the sort of oxymoronic play on words from canard's other meaning, "Saint Baseless-Rumor". LOL. It also has reference in Aviation, of which I am also a somewhat avid buff, having grown up under Midway Airport's runways.

I chose the Red Wing track plan for three reasons: It fit a 4x8 with simple trackage; it had a yard form which to expand; there are lots of scenic possibilities.

My modifications reflect things and places important to me, and fit the overall midwestern theme I am shooting for. Of course, while none of these may stand on their own, since there is only so much you can cram into a 4x8 without overdoing it nor becoming staid and boring, they are still evidenced such as:

- The dominant yard feature with overpass clearly reminds me of Cicero Avenue in Chicago where it passes over the Belt Railway's (EVERY CLASS 1 RR) huge hump yard. Albeit on a MUCH smaller scale.

- The Canyon/Hill geography was inspired by all my road trips in 1999, along I-68 to Cumberland, and through the blackfoot mountains in NC, plus the local geography where I live in Frankfort. I-64 cuts through Frankfort and at the KY river, the approach to the bridge looks similar to the cut up to the overpass on the layout.

- The Fall foliage was also inspired by Cumberland area... which is a sight that truly must be seen to beheld.

- The small downtown and country store evokes many of the towns in KY, but could just as well be anywhere...

- The truck terminal was obvious. There was one right behind the house where I grew up in Chicago (between the house and the RR yard).

- The "unnamed" cement plant is an homage to my Italian "mafiosi" heritage, LOL. Plus it was tall enough to lend some contrast against the hill.

- The cliff face may not be entirely plausible, but there are features very much like this in Frankfort, and elsewhere I presume. The name "Canard Creek Cannery" helps to explain this, as originally being cut down over time by a river (with some human blasting to finish the job).

- The predominance of Evergreen trees not only fits the logo and image of the STC (duh)... but was inspired by the rolling hills of Southern Wisconsin, with its hundreds of Christmas Tree farms. Plus, the name "Saint Canard" always struck me as something only a Wisconsite would come up with... so believe it or not, WI is actually the STC's originating home base... somewhere near Madison.

So... fitting my proto-freelance theme: on a small scale, there are features that remind me personally of Chicago and Frankfort, which are near the N and S terminae of the STC, respectively. The affiliation with Chessie explains the Cumberland references. The real Chessie did purchase a Rock Island subdivision when the Rock went under in 1980; hence my affiliation with the ROCK (as the STC would cross the two and use the Rock to go west to the Mississippi).

But... all the scenes are somewhat "generic" enough to fit anywhere... so anyone can hopefully relate. Plus, when I started construction, I was not 100% sure on where my future interests would lie, so it would be easy to change. But it works, so it stays :)

Now all I need is a new, bigger basement with an attached house, to expand out from that yard...

Guh. Someone please shut me up. Or submit this to MR [:P]

First YOU DON'T LIKE "MR" REMEMBER!!!!! [:X]

2) Funny how the town looks like small town New Jersey and/or Ontario

3) WPLA. Radio staion? You mentioned this once before can't remember why though.

4) about expansion, have you thought about a helix up to another level. I have a UP layout in a MR track planner that allows 15' foot trains in a modest room!!!! [8)] [8)] [8)] [8)] [8)] [8)]

5) Glad you got the "Ducky" reference and yeah I also am of the Aero persuasion. Learned to fly on a Cessnaa 172 when I was 17 out of Springbank Airport in Calgary, Alberta.
One of my favourite aero designers after Donald Douglas and Claude Dornier is a fella named Burnelli, same geographic heritage, who pioneered the idea of a flying/blended wing design, Have a look:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnelli_CBY-3

lastly, I'll see if I can find something to replace the NH State car in the buy/trade for the Planters car. Or I'll just ship the 430 and NC car to you.

PS: Cement-> Italian? Wouldn't that be waste disposal? Course thats from me having lived in Joisy!

...oh, but I was sticking my toungue out at them after all

AH! I forgot to mention WPLA! Yes, what is a dinkly vintage (an possibly "O" scale by the door size) Plasticville building doing on that layout of higher-end kits anyway? Glad you asked. I DJ'd a college station for three semesters in Chicago. Had a blast. Can't believe I got away with it. Sometimes I listen to the old tapes and frankly, I cringe. Ah, thems were the days.

You ARE familiar with the finer categories of Italian goods, aren't you? Models, Cuisine, Tailored Suits and Cement Boots. [;)]

(ever wonder why Walthers included decals to name that place "Hoffa Cement"?)[Oops!]

Btw; GIC, did you notice the T-Bird beside the streetcar in my LotW posting? That's my favourite version!

That layout is genuinely a real accomplishment in a small space, or even a big space. It displays a great deal of skill and planning. The Saint Canard theme is very interesting and believable.

Gareth - right idea... wrong location.

Brian - Glad somebody noticed that. I love that Winnie and it was another case where train show admission was worth the price to find something I never knew existed. I got that Winnie in a box of loose stuff for a dollar, and added some paint for detailing. It looks great.

The "Pocket Cars" series was made by Tomica, a Japanese diecast company with a pretty dedicated following; when I've looked on ebay the Tomicas I'm interested in seem to go for a bit more than I'd like for one measly "not quite HO" car. I would like to find the Lincoln Mark IV as my in-laws still have a near-mint '74 that has ben garaged since 1992. I still hope to restore it to driveability; if I lived closer it would be done.

I haven't actually seen a pocket "car" though... I get the impression they are noticeably too big for HO - perhaps closer to 1:64 or Hot Wheels - but of course the Winnie was almost-perfect HO just to fit a larger vehicle into their packaging.

I don't get back to Chicago as often as I'd like, but I do when I can. My wife is what (er, who) dragged me to KY, but I like it here for the most part (as long as I am out of Lexington). My in-laws are all from the Greensburg area, a couple hours east of your kin. It's a RR desert out there; the IC and L&N used to have a presence but the last line was ripped up about 20 years ago. You can still see the old roadbed in spots along US68 though.

What part of Chicago were you from?

I grew up in Valpo. Not quite Chicago, but close!

Photos fixed, to clarify some "inside jokes" at my expense for the benefit of newcomers...

Glad to see these photos again!! After drooling some more, I have a couple questions for you:

1) Who made the nice big rigs you used? I have found a couple at Walmart (but cannot remember the maker!). But that supply was limited to only the tractors and no trailers were carried. The line is still available at the local Walmart, but the selection is limited to European vehicles now.

2) Did/will you add photos showing Harley and Cat Woman?!

The big rigs are from a variety of sources, collected over the past 20 years. Most of the trailers in the terminal are Athearns (both old and new) simply because of the railroad heralds. I also have trailers by Walthers, ConCor, Herpa, Accurail, A-Line.... and Road Champs from your local "BigBox".

The semi cabs are also a mix, mainly Athearn and Herpa with some oddballs thrown in. Hotwheels-style cabs are great too and perfect for HO. Matchbox in particular made an excellent Peterbilt cab in the 80's which was widely available until a few years ago; there are three of them on the layout. A little detailing and touch-up and they look very impressive.

I mainly acquire trailers and the like cheap at train shows and yard sales, but did purchase most of the Athearn ones "new". Same goes for HO autos. Train shows are GREAT for finding all kinds of random autos cheaply. I'm somewhat proud of my own collection, with an extensive array of period-appropriate nameplates and styles. As heavily peppered as my layout is, you have to look carefully to spot the same models. Of course plenty of new ones have come out in the past couple years, but I have a lot of old ones too.

As for Batman's quarry... They're on the down low for now but I'm sure they'll attempt a strike again at some point in the future... [;)]

Thanks for the info! I have managed to pick up several of the various HO scale cars that are/were available from Walmart. I admit I have way too many of the Gremlins, but I have always liked the look of that car! I will start looking for the big rigs more at the local swap meets. I have never noticed any there in the past. But I wasn't looking for them then either.

What talent, I don't have words that would do justice to the whole layout and in particular the trailers and chain link fence at the cement factory. Amazing. terry

Thank you [:)]

Trailers are really easy to detail up with sharpies... add some marker lights, metal hinges, and license plates and you're good to go. Newer hobby trailers from the past few years don't need much added though.

The fence was scratchbuilt with aluminum screen door material, toothpicks painted silver, and some thin wire to tie them on.
